Amazon says displaying tariff cost ‘not going to happen’ after White House blowback

Amazon said Tuesday it considered displaying import charges on items sold via its site for ultra-discount items, but that the plan “was never approved and not going to happen.”

The move would have affected items sold on Haul, Amazon’s answer to Chinese discount retailer Temu, which offers apparel, home goods and other items priced at $20 or less.

Ooopsie! Amazon probably realized it would make their customers too aware of how much cheap Chinese crap they well and backed off on the idea of listing the tariff charges.

They could do exactly the same thing— by just listing where the product was from. There was no need to show an actual amount of the tariff—especially since that amount can probably be fudged.

It was NEVER even considered on the regular Amazon page. It was floated for their sub-brand “Haul” (which I would venture almost no one even knows about) - but wasn’t even planned for that platform.

If I were part of the Trump team, I would want Amazon displaying this. It shows where things originate.

In principle, I don't disagree, because consumers deserve transparency on what they're paying for. A detailed breakdown of the manufacturing cost, shipping cost, tariff cost, etc. on each item we buy would be great too.

But if Amazon wants to show where things originate, it can just add that info directly - "75% parts from China, 25% parts from Cameroon, 100% assembled in China", etc.

To be honest with you I really didn’t have an issue with it - It would have been a lot easier for me to choose non-Chinese made products but I know what they were trying to do.
