From grade school memory... Columbus Day October 12 Lincoln’s Birthday February 12 Washington’s Birthday February 22
Am I right?
I recall that Lincoln’s birthday was February 16th.
It used to be Oct 12, then I think they moved it to be another Monday holiday.
Actually President’s day was the combining of 2 holidays George Washington’s birthday and Abraham Lincoln’s birthday. Both were less than a week apart in Feb, when I was growing up.
Yes, I know the two holidays were combined. But I don’t think Lincoln’s was ever official across the nations. States that had been celebrating it simply stopped doing so.
Yes Lincolns and Washington birthdays were once official holidays. I remember because they were postal holidays also.
The good thing is, we have an effort around here underway to enhance the availability of historical texts and convenience for consuming them.
What we are doing is creating free and open source audio books. This includes one work about Christopher Columbus, the subject of Trump's new reinstatement. In general our focus has been works about the Founding or direct biographies of the Founding Fathers themselves, we have around 30 completed so far. We put all of the books under the key word "freeperbookclub".

For someone who loves history and more importantly developing a respect for American history, this should be of some interest and has become a strong effort. Friendly ping, this thread only. No reply necessary.
Back when they were removing statues I suggested something similar. Everybody has a phone and often headphones. So instead of destroying these statues, put one of those scannable barcodes and allow visitors to stream or download an audiobook (or read a webpage transcript for hearing impaired). Topics could range the entire gamut from opinion to historical to the sculptor’s history and almost anything else. Almost anyone would be free to submit an audiobook visitors could choose based on the author or by reviews etc. It’s like when people could go to a museum and rent a headseat walking tour - only now everyone has their own headset all you need is a link.
This technology is an opportunity to educate no matter what one’s opinions or interests may be. Tearing down statues is to try to erase history, and we should have the opportunity to remember even that which we wish never happened. Also some of these are works of art. Some people may be interested in the commission, the technique, the materials, the artists, the placement, and contemporaneous comments.
Of course I just suggested it here, so the idea didn’t get very far :-)
"Lincoln's Birthday was never a U.S. Federal Government holiday."
Yes Lincolns and Washington birthdays were once official holidays.
Thank you.
Well, you know what is happening here. Great minds think alike. :-) And lo-and-behold the idea got somewhere after all!
If I may ask, if you have any what pre-1923 books would you recommend? (Or author or person/topic?) Any book currently in the public domain can be enhanced this way.
Is pre-1923 because of copyright?
James Joyce’s Ulysses.
Excellent! Thank you for the information.
Good choice!
Buuuuut.
It’s already complete. There are actually two separate completions, here’s the second.

Yes, 1923 relates to copyright expiration. The year increments by one each new year, I think its up to 1928 at this point. I haven’t looked in a while. Everything prior to that year is 100% public domain.
This topic was posted , thanks Macho MAGA Man.
* /saving for later. thanks for all that effort!
Well then I suppose they already did The Great Gatsby, too.
Some of Hemingway’s work is before 1928 I’d guess those are done too. But he has more coming up in the years.
Sounds like a fun project. If anyone can do it, need to be talented to read them. I’d consider using different voices for different characters if that’s allowed. Might make it more fun or interesting for the listener.
As I recall at university, the Penguin editions of translated works were always the better, more colorful, more flowery and thoughtful translations. Some idioms don’t quite translate and it takes someone very familiar with both languages to write the translation. But more fun to read. However I’d bet some of those specific translations may still be copyright protected.
Yes! yes! And the scene where Sally Kellerman was reading that stream of consciousness “yes, yes” wa from the last chapter, Penelope, of Ulysses. There’s gotta be a gif of RD saying “yes! Yes!” too. (I’d search but for some reason on the phone my img src links never work).
Excellent 👍
