Harvard Says It Will Not Comply With Trump Administration’s Demands
The New York Times ^ | april 14, 2025 | Vimal Patel

Harvard University said on Monday that it had rejected policy changes requested by the Trump administration, becoming the first university to directly refuse to comply with its demands and setting up a showdown between the federal government and the nation’s wealthiest university.

Other universities have pushed back against the administration’s interference in higher education. But Harvard’s response, which called the Trump administration’s demands illegal, marked a major shift in tone for the nation’s most influential school, which has been criticized in recent weeks for capitulating to Trump administration pressure.

A letter the Trump administration sent to Harvard on Friday demanded that the university reduce the power of students and faculty members over the university’s affairs; report foreign students who commit conduct violations immediately to federal authorities; and bring in an outside party to ensure that each academic department is “viewpoint diverse,” among other steps. The administration did not define what it meant by viewpoint diversity, but it has generally referred to seeking a range of political views, including conservative perspectives.

No government — regardless of which party is in power — should dictate what private universities can teach, whom they can admit and hire, and which areas of study and inquiry they can pursue,” said Alan Garber, Harvard’s president, in a statement to the university on Monday.

Since taking office in January, the Trump administration has aggressively targeted universities, saying it is investigating dozens of schools as it moves to eradicate diversity efforts and what it says is rampant antisemitism on campus. Officials have suspended hundreds of millions of dollars in federal funds for research at universities across the country.

The administration has taken a particular interest in a short list of the nation’s most prominent schools.

Your post is correct in concept—but we are talking nine billion dollars here.

Hopefully Harvard keeps fighting and we get to cut spending by that amount.

How about another pressure point.

Lots of Harvard grads go into government.

Close that door and issue an EO that no Harvard Graduates work in government, or at least in any departments under the authority of the Executive Branch.
Expand this EO to any and all universities who fail to comply.
They are discriminating against women, and it’s easy to prove.

In the meantime, use the Bully Pulpit to discredit all of them, relentlessly.

"No government — regardless of which party is in power — should dictate what private universities can teach …"— Alan Garbar, president of Harvard.

"No government should be forced to give money to private universities" — MAGA.

Alan Garbar is a white Jewish male, like so many academics. I suggest for
equitiy's sake that he relinquish his position to a non-Jewish person of
color, for the sake of "D", "E", "I". If you are going to talk the talk, then you
have to walk the walk.

Why should a sectarian institution with a multi-billion dollar endowment get any government money at all?

Unconditionally cut all federal funding regardless of what they do.

The government could bring big-Ed to its knees by ordering the State Department to issue no student visas. The Ivy League lives off of that teat.

they are still obligated to adhere to Title VI and Title IX (non discrimination which means no trans athletes and no jew haters)

It's all subject to interpretation.

Harvard can argue that transwomen are women, and thus protected under civil rights laws.

And "hate" is protected under the First Amendment. Physical violence isn't, but offending and discomforting people is permitted.

SCOTUS decision banning affirmative action.

You're referring to Bakke? I think the Supreme Court banned "quotas" but permitted "goals and timetables." It was a squishy decision that allowed for loopholes.

Harvard can simply decide to sit tight, drag out any court cases, and hope that a Democrat wins in 2028.

“Illegal”?? I seriously doubt that, as what they are doing is popular but likely illegal in itself. Good luck with that, do without the money, I’m sure they will be just fine.

They feel like they are flying high, higher than God. No one can every bring them down. They are invincible in the Pantheon of academia.

By the way, two minutes of a closed door meeting with Rev.Jackson, Al Sharpton, the BLM leaders or an anti-Israel group boss and they sweat, shake and give in to all demands.

I look forward to them being taken down.

Harvard imposed Obola and Pokahauntus.

All Federal funds should cease
AND Cambridge and Massachusetts should tax Harvard.

No government — regardless of which party is in power — should dictate what private universities can teach, whom they can admit and hire, and which areas of study and inquiry they can pursue,” said Alan Garber, Harvard’s president, in a statement to the university on Monday.

Then don't take government money.

If you expect or accept federal funds, then take the strings attached to them.
