U.K. Parliament recalled as British Steel's future 'hangs in the balance'

PM Keir Starmer will aim to pass an emergency law on Saturday to "take control" of British Steel's plant in Scunthorpe, which is running out of raw materials to make steel

The potential closure of Scunthorpe's British Steel plant would be devastating for workers and their families, the GMB union says

If passed, the new law will give power to Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds to direct and control British Steel - and could allow nationalisation later down the line

The PM and Reynolds expressed disappointment in British Steel's Chinese owner Jingye, which says it has been losing around £700,000 a day

The Tories say the government is "scrambling for a solution", as both the Lib Dems and Reform UK say they support nationalisation

Politics: a state of delusion

"I have to admit though, that I am puzzled by this sudden rush to save the blast furnaces as the government under net-zero is committed to phasing out pig iron production, so in due course these furnaces will be shut down anyway as the site is converted to produce “green” steel."

running out of raw materials to make steel

So......if you take over the steel plant that does not have enough shhhhtuff to make the steel, if you eventually nationalize the industry,.... Then... Shazam! The shhhhtuuuuf you need to make the steel will magically appear.

This is a lot of a hullabaloo for a company that was only founded in 2016: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Steel_(2016%E2%80%93present)

“Nationalism is just a step away from communism.”

Perhaps, but what would you propose the UK do in the short term instead, since they’re absolutely committed to government policies make producing steel hugely unprofitable for ANYONE (domestic or foreign) to produce steel there? Just give up on steel or something?

Here’s the problem in a nutshell.

In line with Reaganism and Thatcherism, the Tories sold off everything in the state interest including the national silver to the highest bidder. Even if it was critical to national security that we kept the ownership onshore.

They did the same with Electricity, Water, Coal, Aluminium, Oil and Gas. If it wasn’t nailed down, they threw it in a fire sale.

It’s why the German government owns a part of the British railways. Why France is able to slow walk the development of new nuclear in the UK. Meh, at least we can argue that this makes it less likely that the three countries will go to war against each other.

But ... Why is it that far less reliable “partners” like Russia, China and India have LITERALLY been able to fake the numbers in favor of totally shutting down coal, steel and aluminium processing in the UK. We privatised without barriers and without any protectionism, and where hostile actors bought, they can make “commercial” decisions that threaten national security and force us to be incapable of self sufficiency.

Don’t you get it yet? Even after everything President Trump has been telling you?

Globalization as a concept wasn’t the problem. Globalization as a mantra, following the Thatcher - Reagan - Harvard MBA carpetbagging logic, IS the catastrophe.

Y’all in USA are now so easily triggered by the word “socialism!!!” that you offshored everything that couldn’t be nailed down just because doing anything else got labelled Socialist. You’d literally rather the Russian or Chinese State owned your ass through shell companies than have the US Federal state own it.

Trump has been saying for years that this mentality is not just anti protectionist, it’s against the American national interest. He was saying it long before adopting the Republican ticket. And he was pointing out something that the soft Left were pointing out. They were the canaries in the coal mine.

They were telling y’all this is a big mistake for years, while the Right went full steam ahead and decried Statism, Unionism, Protectionism... While flogging off your stuff to Russian oligarchs and communist shell companies.

Nobody wants British Steel owned by India or China. Nobody wants China to be able to shut down the UK’s entire steel refining capability simply by refusing to let their coking fuel reach the plant.

But because nobody in the PRIVATE sector gives a damn about this, and because China won’t sell it to anyone else, we’re buggered. If we don’t nationalise Scunthorpe, we LOSE THE ENTIRE INDUSTRY FOREVER. Because that’s what the Chinese game is.

That intervention isn’t Socialism, it’s a National Security issue. British Steel is existential to Critical National Infrastructure.

And you watch. The minute they think Scunthorpe is saved they’ll flog it for a song to any old outfit with deep enough pockets, putting us back in the same position UNLESS they impose Protectionism.

BobL, for a change I completely agree with you here. Slavish adherence to the Free Market ideology, in combination with a perception that it didn’t matter who the buyer is, got the UK and the USA in the same boat.

The paradigm shift is obvious.

The enemy is not ‘resisted’ by unfettered free market capitalism; it’s EMPOWERED by us following principles against our national interest. We’re literally letting fifty year old Harvard business school mentalities set up in a much simpler age, jeopardize our national security.

This is one of the reasons why Trump’s pivoted so hard in favor of tariffs. It’s also why the Chinese buy up of land around America’s military bases needs Federal intervention.

Federal intervention in the USA, or UK Government intervention in the UK, is not a capitulation to Statism. It’s happening because there’s no obvious alternative - the free market opposes what’s necessary.

The Never Trump lot are dining out on the fact that even Donald Trump’s own gift shop is 99% stocked with stuff that’s Made In China, including the MAGA hats.

And they’re dredging up footage of Trump being embarrassed in an interview a couple of decades ago where he talked about bringing back “Made in America” and praised the quality of his own suits and ties only to have the interviewer point out that not one single thing he was showing off was being made in America.

All he could do was give a wry laugh.
