President Donald Trump on Monday ordered the proposed acquisition of U.S. Steel by Japan's Nippon Steel to undergo a new review after the deal was blocked by President Joe Biden.
Trump directed the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States to review the acquisition again to assist "in determining whether further action in this matter may be appropriate," according to a presidential action issued by the White House on Monday.
U.S. Steel shares spiked 11% in reaction to the decision.
Trump gave the committee 45 days to submit a recommendation on whether measures suggested by U.S. Steel and Nippon "are sufficient to mitigate any national security risks."
Biden blocked the $14.9 billion deal in January, citing a potential threat to critical supply chains posed by one of the largest steel producers in the U.S. coming under foreign control.

Sounds like a deal has been negotiated. Just a reminder: Trump loves a good deal even more than tariffs or merger blocks.

Giant Asian companies doing their production in the U.S. is exactly what Trump is looking for.
Uh oh
I’d bet it depends on if Japan is willing to help out with the trade inbalance.
Trade is always balanced. If we buy Japanese made the Japanese get US dollars. They can only one thing they can do with those dollars, besides letting them sit and slowly erode, buy something dominated in dollars. That can be an article, a service, media, or a company or real estate. Buying a company or real estate is called direct foreign investment.
So the trade surplus with Japan balances out when Japan invest in the US like with this deal.
As long as US Steel maintains control, it sounds, Trump will let Nippon invest in it.
Ok so this is good. In the pea brained mind of a Free Traitor foreign nationals owning our real estate and companies is a good thing. Wow, how in the hell do you even have the brain power to remember to breath?
Sheesh, you must hate Trump as much as I hate Schumer! OMG! Did you hear Trump bragging about his $5T in foreign investments he’s lined up already? So it was a good thing when all that American investment left along with those thousands of factories for China, huh? WOW! That’s a very unique point of view. The reverse, Japanese investments coming here, is so horrible? Maybe you should find Biden and cry on his shoulder.
And that Camry factory down the road from me, cranking them out for 20 years, employs nothing but Kentucky “free traitors”?!?
Did you give up on trade marking free traitor? How well are you coping with Zero Tariffs like Trump just did with Argentina? Zero Tariffs looks a whole lot like free trade. Is Trump a traitor?
Did I say it, foreign investment, was good? But if Trump says it is good I won’t argue with him. Will you? Will you also insult the Bethlehem union works who support this deal?
Do you disapprove all the deals Trump is making for foreign investment. Or do you think these companies are making donations?
Great middle class jobs cranking out American steel for other American great middle class jobs. The excess will be sent back to Japan for sale.
That is exactly what I voted for.
The Argentina thing is not a done deal.
Big boost in national security, too.
Audi building a new plant in the USA is a good thing. Audi buying up EXISTING US companies making car parts is bad thing. See the difference?
The US Steel owned by Nippon is a bad idea. We ( US govt) should subsidize this critical piece of infrastructure.
The 10% baseline tariff is non negotiable at this point. I hope Trump holds the line on that.
“In the end, once the USA has been completely stripped mined of all manufacturing resources, they will buy up our food, land and cattle. We will then be a nation of serf losers.“
Did you part company with MAGA world and now pine for the Biden policy of restricting exports of LNG? What about coal? Should we leave it in the ground or sell it overseas? Should Trump quit fighting to open foreign markets for US dairy and beef?
I suppose alfalfa for Saudi horses and soybeans for Japan is too much for you as well.
I was talking about manufacturing, the heart of any first world economy. You brought up exporting food and coal. I am not crazy about exporting food or energy of any kind.
