There were new fears for King Charles’ health Thursday, after the king was briefly hospitalized after suffering “temporary side effects” following scheduled treatment for his cancer.
A number of engagements on Thursday were cancelled, and the palace said that they were cancelling a raft of commitments scheduled for Friday “as a precautionary measure.”
Sources sought to play down the severity of the incident and said that the king was working at his desk at his London home Thursday evening, with one saying, “This is simply the most minor bump in a road that’s very much heading in the right direction.”
Official sources said that the king was expected to resume his full program of engagements next week.
Charles has maintained a packed diary since he was diagnosed with cancer last year, and although some events have been modified or abbreviated, his stamina has generally been little short of remarkable.
A source who saw the king last month, for example, told the Daily Beast that on the day they saw him, he seemed spry despite having travelled several hundred miles to Cornwall and back for an event with government officials before attending a full evening performance at the Royal Ballet in an informal, private capacity, and staying on after the show to talk to the cast and crew.
Despite his undoubted bravery and enthusiasm for carrying out his job, Thursday’s announcement and the ensuing disruption is a stark reminder of the bald fact that Charles, who is 76, is suffering from a very serious illness for which he is likely to receive treatment for until the end of his days.

Only the good die young.
Allah is ready to “welcome” Charles.
Onward to King William and Kate.
Hopefully William won’t be as Woke and Weak as his father.
Any. ETs that Ming Charles the Muslim is buried the same day that he dies? I think it unlikely due to the burial rituals of the royal family but that inbred, neporoyal would love to follow Muslim tradition.
Better William and Kate than Harry and Meagan.
Too often.
I have had 2 friends who died from the side effects of chemotherapy-their cancer was in remission, but the chemo totally destroyed them-not a good death. So I never wish death on or make snide remarks about anyone who is going through that hell-no matter who they are-God bless king Charles-I hope he recovers and survives for as many years as everyone else in his family...
It’s getting time for King Tapon. Wonder if William will retired Queen Consort Taponess C’milla the Dog to a dowager cottage?
As someone who also has cancer and will probably will be on chemo for the rest of my life, I agree. I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy, if I had one. I hope he continues to be able to put up a good fight.
Anyone *wishing* death on anyone, regardless of who, is tempting karma to give them their comeuppance. Not to mention it’s very bad form.
I dial it back to saying I’ll not miss them when they’re gone. But karma might see through my veiled ploy...hope not lol
Hang in there, FRiend.
Jimmy Seville will be glad to see him again.
Thank you, and God bless you.
Yes i am a crass grumpy old bastard….that stipulated, is there a betting pool ?
Living in a household with three generations of crazed women has brought me to this.
Not wishing any ill to another.
My mother would always jokingly say that she was too miserable to die. She passed at the too young age of 69. I'm 77. Will turn 78 in August, the Good Lord Willing. Been the last one in my family since 2014. Nobody lived past 74. Youngest, my only brother died at 51.
God Bless you. I wish you well, and a long life. My youngest son had surgery for Stage 3 colon cancer in 2019 at the age of 48. He underwent six months of chemo, which he still suffers severe neuropathy in this feet from. He’s been cancer-free for 6 years, but is now being treated for Obstructive Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy. Last November he had to have major surgery for an internal hernia that was causing a blockage. He was in the hospital for two weeks last November. Came home for two weeks, and ended up back in the hospital for internal bleeding unrelated to the surgery. They repaired the bleeding via an Endoscopy. Other than some problems with the healing of his lengthy incision for a couple of months, he’s totally healed.
