Ontario will charge 25 per cent more for electricity shipped to 1.5 million Americans starting Monday in response to U.S. President Donald Trump's tariffs, Premier Doug Ford said Thursday.
The province provides electricity to Minnesota, New York and Michigan. Earlier this week, Ford warned the governors of those states about the coming changes.
"You touch the stove once, you get burned, you don't touch that stove again," Ford said. "We're going to make sure that we follow through with what we said we were going to do."
Ford said he felt bad about laying the surcharge.
"I feel terrible for the three governors, I have a phenomenal relationship (with them)," he said.
He said he spoke with Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz on Wednesday.
"All three governors think tariffs on their closest allies and friends is absolutely terrible," Ford said.
"And Republicans, as well, behind closed doors, say this is the worst thing that he could do. And now I need the Republicans to come out and speak out about it. They're too scared."

Time to switch who power is bought from.
Interestingly a lot of power is contracted, adding the surcharge will violate a lot of those contracts directly. Will be curious to see how that works out.
The tariff he wants will end up violating some contracts directly with the power companies in Ontario. He might find some legal issues.
“All three governors think tariffs on their closest allies and friends is absolutely terrible,” Ford said.
So is Canada dropping its tariffs on American products? Or is American not a closest ally and friend? Hopefully they can route American energy there and this clown can sit on his unsold electricity.
O Canada, you may come to regret these actions. You haven’t been paying your fair share all along and now you want to try for more?
It may become a real problem for Canada in “other” areas in the future. This is so sad. They got used to the free handouts in defense and other areas and figured it was their due.....
I like Canada. I honeymooned there. Oh well.
“All three governors think tariffs on their closest allies and friends is absolutely terrible,” Ford said. “”””
So tell me, what have our “friends and allies” Canada and Mexico done for us?
LOL - I remember in 2021 when Andrew Cuomo with the help of RFK JR. shut-down NY’s Indian Point nuclear plant, which supplied 50% of NY City’s baseload power. 2GW of “low carbon,” steady electric power produced accident free since 1961, for 3 cents per KWH
I think the excuse was some kind of fish being unable to spawn at the plant’s water outlet into the Hudson
Leftists are such A@@#@es
What do you expect from your largest trading partner, (Canada) to just “lie back and take it”?
While I am mostly for Trump, this is the definitive shot in one’s own foot.
1% of your invaders, and 1% of the drugs come across the northern border. While that is still too much, proportionality should be a factor.
This is going to hurt both our economies.
I do appreciate that this has awakened the slumbering morons that have been voting LIEberal up here, though.
Meanwhile, Albany has a mad on for coal and nat gas.
WTG, Albany!
Tampon Tim Walz is pushing for carbon free electricity in Minnesota by 2030, so a few tens of thousands acres of solar panels and replacing most of the trees in Northern Minnesta with windmills we can thumb our noses at the Canadians.
First they said they were not going to supply the electricity. Now they will, but with a tariff.
The US should just stop buying electricity from Ontario. That is a high dollar commodity they sell to us. They need to sell it far more than we need to buy it.
Canada has great competitive advantages, because of their hydropower and to a degree nukes. There is nothing cheaper than hydro, so replacement is always going to be a net plus to utility costs. Worse for industrial, especially aluminum processing.
This tariff war thing was going to cost, no matter what, and this was always a Canadian trump card.
Who can stand the pain longest is the question.
One of the BIG players in North American power gen -

11,000 megawatts nameplate capacity - thats 11 nukes worth.

“...However, the state depends on energy supplies from elsewhere to meet nearly 85% of its energy needs.16...”
Cute little story there, Mr Ford. But liable to get your ass scorched.
so... does he actually think Trump is not going to do something even worse to him?
The way electric sales work is the grid operators seek out the lowest cost suppliers. A 25% increase would most likely make Canadian electricity non competitive.
It just makes Trumps point. You have to be self sufficient for things you really need and depend on. I hope Trump has the courage to go through with it. Don’t like to see all the back peddling.
We haven’t heard from the rest yet. Ontario Power btw has 4 nukes plus 8 MW Hydro nameplate capacity. That’s a lot, and if all Canada does this it will be a heavy hit from Maine to California.
Who will hurt how much for how long.

Not with hydro. One starts with very cheap. And do they have alternative capacity? Nobody was planning on losing Canadian hydro.
Interesting points. I’ve never understood the rationale Trump is using to punish Canada.
Are illegal Guatemalans streaming in from our northern border?
And as for drugs, I found this tidbit.....
Fentanyl seizures at the Canadian border accounted for approximately 0.2% of the total fentanyl seized by U.S. border authorities in fiscal year 2024.
In fiscal year 2024, U.S. Customs and Border Protection seized 43 pounds of fentanyl at the Canadian border, compared to 21,100 pounds at the Mexican border.
The initial months of fiscal year 2025 (October to December 2024) showed a similar trend, with only 10 pounds (about 0.2%) of fentanyl seized at the Canadian border, while 4,415 pounds (approximately 97.2%) were seized at the Mexican border.
