The premier of Canada’s most populous province threatened to retaliate and cut off energy to the US “with a smile on my face” — as President Trump’s new 25% tariffs on imports took effect Tuesday.
“If they want to try to annihilate Ontario, I will do everything — including cut off their energy with a smile on my face,” Ontario Premier Doug Ford vowed Monday, the Toronto Sun reported.
“They rely on our energy, they need to feel the pain. They want to come at us hard, we’re going to come back twice as hard.” The US is a major customer of Canada’s electricity.Ontario alone powered 1.5 million homes in the US in 2023 and is a major exporter of electricity to New York, as well as other border states like Michigan and Minnesota.

I live in a very red part of upstate New York.
These idiots in Canada are proving why we need to have energy independence from them.
I live in a rural area. My neighbors are all Trump supporters and we will absolutely help each other and get through anything Canada throws at us.
You know - if Trump’s tariffs were arbitrary - he might have a point.
But the tariffs simply match what Canada is charging in tariffs and VATs on the same categories of products. It is the ultimate “level the playing field” move and could easily be avoided were the unequal tariffs + VATs charged by Canada on US goods were removed or reduced to match what we charge. Alas - Canadian leadership is lacking any form of integrity or honesty.

These tools are mewling about us wanting to “obliterate Ontario” when in fact Trump is simply responding to the tariffs they already apply to our goods? Their electorate must be even more uninformed than ours if they don’t see through that stupidity.

I dunno about lower lower Michigan but, in the northern part as well as the UP, many timber plants have biomass co-gen plants.
The UP WI border has a river, the Menominee, which has hydro electric dams from one end to the other.
Why is Trudeau imposing inflationary tariffs on US imports? I thought they believed in free trade?
