The premier of Ontario, Doug Ford, has threatened the U.S. over Donald Trump’s plans to impose tariffs on Canadian exports.
After initially putting a hold on his planned tariffs against Canada and Mexico, Trump confirmed this week that he would move forward with plans to 25 percent tariffs on both countries until both countries agreed to his demands surrounding border security.
In an interview on NBC News, Ford said he had never met a single American who supported the idea of tariffs, despite the fact that the majority of Americans voted for Donald Trump.
Ford ranted:
We are the largest purchaser of alcohol in the world. We buy over 3,600 products from 35 states. I talked to the Governor of Kentucky and Mitch McConnell. Don’t touch our bourbon. I’m going after absolutely everything.
And I don’t want to. We keep the lights on for 1.5 million homes in manufacturing in New York, in Michigan, and in Minnesota.
If he wants to destroy our economy and our families, I will shut down the electricity going down to the U.S. And I’m telling you, we will do it.
Ford then went on to say that Americans, particularly those in red states, would feel immense pain as his retaliatory measures.
He continued:

The only states who get power from other states or nations are in the climate cult. Go ahead and shut their power off.
Canada in means “ankle biter” in native American languages.
One has to wonder, and with respect to “master trollers”, they always keep you wondering!

As someone said in the thread, only something like 1.2% of it goes to the USA. I don’t know if that is true, though. But your question is a valid one.
Unfortunately for him, he will be cutting off power to Dem states NY, Minnesota and Michigan, the only 3 states he supplies. In exchange we get Ontario’s American auto industry to return home to Michigan which will move them into the red column. You lose, Doug
In other words, we import electricity from Canada out of convenience, not necessity.
The U.S. economy is ~13 times larger than Canada’s, and Canada is highly dependent on the U.S. Cutting off electricity exports would hurt Ontario as much as the U.S.
This is political grandstanding, not a serious strategy—about as effective as Vermont threatening to cut off maple syrup sales to NYC.
What if he cuts off power to our northern communities, then those communities change to an American provider and never look back. I don’t think the premier has thought this through.

Lol electricity cannot be exported to other markets Doug. Start shutting down the plants and laying off the workers and see how long that works for you. See what happens to your economy when those dollars stop flowing north of the border. We can replace your electricity. You cannot replace our dollars
