THE NEWS from Washington reached Ukraine in real time. In all corners of the country—in offices and trenches, cafes and factories—people watched President Donald Trump and Vice-President J.D. Vance attack Volodymyr Zelensky, with claims that he had been “disrespectful”. On the front lines, amid artillery duels and explosions, those who could turned to messaging apps to express their anguish at the deliberate humiliation of their president. “Andriy”, an officer in a secret unit with access to the chats, says Mr Zelensky’s rating has been boosted among soldiers. “I don’t remember the last time someone said, this is over, time to pack up. On the contrary, everyone is saying Sanych [a nickname for Mr Zelensky] has done well.”
Yet the disaster in the Oval office has also raised fears that America might now move to choke off support for Ukraine, and questions about whether Europe could ever compensate. Among Ukraine’s stunned elite there is a growing debate about whether Mr Zelensky is still the right person to lead the country. According to one former diplomat, “Zelensky’s demise is now inevitable...because he is inconveniently stubborn and basically got hated by both Trump and Putin. They both need someone submissive in Ukraine.”
Mr Zelensky has now landed in Britain and is due to meet Sir Keir Starmer, the prime minister, on the afternoon of March 1st. The day after both will attend a summit with European leaders in London. Those leaders have made public statements backing Mr Zelensky. But the meeting will illuminate how much credibility Mr Zelensky really has left and whether Europe has the resolve to attempt to militarily support Ukraine without full American backing. Ukraine’s hero is in danger of becoming a tragic figure.

Yes, a very complicated convoluted history. One that doesn’t map well to the often-superficial understanding of history most people have.
“ If NATO chooses of voluntary war, there is no reason for America to join in.”
Ukraine isn’t a member of NATO! We are not obligated to protect Ukraine. If the EU wants protect Ukraine, it’s on their dime. What land Russia has taken since 2014, they’re not giving it back. That’s the starting point of negotiations for Russia.
Trump needs to end the payment of salaries and paychecks for all Ukrainians immediately.
End the payments of Zelinski’s workers. Let the EU pay for it.
The Economist is a horrible Globalist Rag.
Note that to date no European nation's military has 'officially' crossed the Ukrainian border, to fight in military alliance and action with the Ukrainian military under Zelensky.
Their bluff is being called, and the best the EU can imagine is completing the expropriation of Russian money under EU control. Once the EU "nationalizes" the money, they will further blot their copybook and make any further "settlement" with Russia all the more difficult for them.
My wife observes that Zelensky spends a great deal of time outside Ukraine these days....
That's it, SaxxonWoods. Well said.
In many respects, Ukraine today is like Japan before it surrendered. Japan was utterly defeated in the Spring of 1945. Yet its tyrannical military leaders held a stranglehold on the people.
The death of 2,900 suicide attacks could not stop the inevitable defeat of Japan.
The war is over. Ukraine can't win. And Europe is not going to send its soldiers to fight in Ukraine.
The Ukrainian people must rise up and overthrow Voldemort Zelensky, the evil tyrant who refuses to show mercy to his own people. Until Z is stopped, the suicide attacks in the Ukrainian killing fields will continue.
They say Trump is unpredictable which is untrue.
Trump is ONLY unpredictable to those who view things through the prism from which the establishment takes its view.
Trump has assessed the situation perfectly.
He said that the con man did not want a peace deal.
If the con man wants a deal, then he will have to STFU, sit at the kiddie table and eat crow followed by a dessert of humble pie.
Zelensky took himself out of the negotiations as far as Trump is concerned.
The con man will have to unceremoniously sign a deal, then Trump cuts a deal with Putin freezing out the con man and his team.
Otherwise, Trumps cuts off the spigot and the Euroweenies and the little dictator go it alone.
The Democrats basically want Z to be the face of the Anti-Trump Resistance, because they don’t have one of their own.
The EU is worse than worthless, the European nations will do NOTHING AT ALL for teeny Mr. Z., so he'd better face the hard, cold facts of the situation, because UNCLE SUGAR is done with them for good and all, now that the mineral deal has been left in a muddy puddle.
You’re right, nopardons. And I love your imagery. The mineral deal has indeed been “left in a muddy puddle.”
My grandmother was a Russian living in Ukraine. I get it. They hate each other and always have.
Many thanks; much appreciated!
Many different people have what used be known as “BLOOD HATRED” for others, which most Americans don’t understand. A lot of it has to do with having been taken over by the other and/or one nation meddling with another one/s; even if that was a century or more ago.
The idea that Putin is under the same risk of being harmed as Zelensky if either one makes a deal is really far-fetched.
I know that the Ukraine is not a member of NATO and is not an ally. What I am saying is that if Europe wants to voluntarily fight a war with Russia then we are under no obligation to defend the belligerents.
