What I heard in Munich — ordinary Germans long for a Trump of their own
NY Post ^ | February 17, 2025 | Kenneth R. Weinstein

Last week Vice President JD Vance told a group of outraged elites at the Munich Security Conference that European politicians must do a better job of responding to their voters’ concerns, rather than ignoring or censoring them.

Vance’s forceful rhetoric made good on President Trump’s promise to fight for the long-overlooked interests of ordinary citizens.

Nothing proved Vance’s point more to me this weekend than the gulf between the elite conference-goers and the regular Germans I chatted with.

Average Germans understand their nation is in crisis — and are exasperated that it took an American leader to say so.

Germany’s once-vaunted industrial prowess is a thing of the past: It trails even its European neighbors in fields from digital technology to rail infrastructure.

Layoffs in the auto industry, unthinkable 20 years ago, are now commonplace as over-regulation and an ideological obsession with green energy cause anemic economic growth.

Massive migration from Islamic countries since 2015 has created a dangerous domestic-security challenge. Women can no longer walk safely at night in cities.

Munich itself on the eve of the conference saw yet another act of Islamist terror: A 24-year-old illegal alien from Afghanistan drove a car into a crowd, killing two and wounding more than 30.

Immigration, by far, tops voter concerns heading into this Sunday’s Bundestag election.

If only they had leaders there that thought like the USA’s Founding Fathers instead of socialism 24/7 and different ways of packaging it; a pseudo-Trump rooted in Eurosoc values will be a recipe for war.

,,, Champagne socialists have got the EU to where it is now. Spreading poverty evenly hasn’t worked out, but that was the plan.

The Germans crave to be held at leather’s end. They are always a problem no matter who it is that takes grip of the reins.

Well, at least so far. It might change.

They got one, only she is a Trumpess.

You won't believe this gal! If she wins they are seriously thinking about voiding the election due to "Musk interference".

Funny thing is I always hear from Germans how great Germany is. From Germans that live HERE! LOL. If its so great in Germany I wonder why they are here at all.

,,, what surprises me is how nationalist the AfD is. She wants US bases out of Germany. As long as NATO is together, surely a base like Ramstein serves a purpose in the big peace dividend scheme. Hosting it means the first call when things heat up, as they probably will with Poland.

That is strange indeed, but maybe it’s just sentimentality.

A late friend of my parents had a holiday home in Canada, with oodles of room for his family. He always used to say that Canadians were free-range, whereas we Germans were caged😁

LOL. My wife considers herself German, so she never appreciates any German jokes from me. I’m in Canada too with a wife from the USA. Her grandparents were part of a society that represented Germans from Russia. So their history were the merchant class that Catherine of Russia invited into Russia.

Hasn‘t there been quite some debate in America, and here on FR, whether to quit Nato?

If it’s America‘s wish, Europeans will have to comply.

I, for my part, would like a better understanding with our next door neighbours, Poland and Hungary. Sadly, hardly anyone knows that German relationships with Poland and Hungary used to be good, for the most part, in the Middle Ages.

Hmmm…yes, but weren‘t these German settlers in Russia, the Volga Germans, mostly farmers, originally at least? I know that in the late 19th century, many Volga Germans emigrated to the New World, as their regional autonomy was more and mor restricted by governmental pressure.

The Baltic Germans in the Russian Empire were an entirely different matter, as were the middle-class Moscow Germans.

Yes, the ethnic German minorities in Eastern Europe are a very thankful object of study.

,,, from what I can see, it's a case of non-American NATO members not paying a reasonable cost towards running NATO, as measured by a ratio of their respective GDPs - defense budgets. The parasites in Brussels will only focus on the transition to a green economy, stacking Europe up with immigrants who are unqualified and, for the most part liabilities on stretched medical, education and other facilities. Defense, mining and other segments of the economy that are well established are way down the list, if not off the list. It's no surprise that the US, in not being able to pay their own [fiscal] bills is now, under Trump's watch, looking inreasingly through a cost/benefit lens.

Europe has fallen behind because the leadership has been obsessed with regulation instead of forward planning and they've decided the EU should spread east, collecting peasant States as they go. One thing... I'm a big fan of Viktor Orban. Hungary and Poland seem to stand up to the Champagne socialists who, at every turn preach diversity, but when faced with any traditional and rational discourse, reach the end of understanding diversity. Proof of that statement... look at Europe right now and the track that's got it to this point.

You are very correct with your assessment of the situation. Alas.

These champagne socialists really are tyrannical in their entire attitude and demeanour.

Yeah, he was national socialism. What do they have now, 80 years later and getting wiped out in WWII, national socialism, oh yeah, and mass immigration by peoples who are barbarians.

,,, now the microscope is being put on the USAID racket, it will be interesting to see who at that level is connected with the WEF and/or Soros. Access to government money is handy at that scale.

I think the post by Mr. Dirtysecret was dripping sarcasm, as nobody of sound mind, in my opinion, would say that Hitler would have been good without the killings.

Yes, and I am also twitching for these results to be revealed.

100 billion dollars have been embezzled, if I am not mistaken, since 175 billion dollars have been sent to Ukraine, and President Zelensky maintains that no more than 75 billion dollars have actually reached his country‘s coffers.
