JD Vance blasts 'crazy exchange' after CBS' Margaret Brennan tells Marco Rubio that Nazis weaponized free speech
Daily Mail ^

Vice President JD Vance has slammed CBS News' Margaret Brennan for what he called a 'crazy exchange' she had with Secretary of State Marco Rubio Sunday morning.

Brennan was questioning Rubio about the vice president's remarks at the Munich Security Conference, in which he argued that free speech and democratic institutions were being eroded, when she erroneously linked the Holocaust to free speech.

'He was standing in a country where free speech was weaponized to conduct genocide and he met with the head of a political party that has far-right views and some historic ties to extreme groups,' the news anchor said.

'The context of that was changing the tone of it,' she said of Vance's speech. 'And you know that.'

Rubio then defended Vance, who later took to X to write that it was a 'crazy exchange.'

'Does the media really think the Holocaust was caused by free speech?'

For his part, Rubio confronted Brennan, saying he would have to 'disagree' with her.

'Free speech was not used to conduct a genocide,' he argued on Face the Nation.

Free speech is a fundamental human right.

As is the right to vote in a free and fair election.

We shouldn't offer military protection or financial support to any nation not supporting our values.

RUBIO: — Well I have to disagree with you. No- I have- I have to disagree with you. Free speech was not used to conduct a genocide. The genocide was conducted by an authoritarian Nazi regime that happened to also be genocidal because they hated Jews and they hated minorities and they hated those that they- they had a list of people they hated, but primarily the Jews. There was no free speech in Nazi Germany. There was none. There was also no opposition in Nazi Germany, they were a sole and only party that governed that country. So that’s not an accurate reflection of history.

I also think it’s wrong- again, I go back to the point of his speech. The point of his speech was basically that there is an erosion in free speech and intolerance or opposing points of view within Europe, and that’s of concern because that is eroding.

That’s not an erosion of your military capabilities, that’s not an erosion of your economic standing, that’s an erosion of the actual values that bind us together in this transatlantic union that everybody talks about, and I think allies and friends and partners that have worked together now for 80 years, should be able to speak frankly to one another in open forums without being offended, insulted, or upset. And I spoke to Foreign Ministers from multiple countries throughout Europe. Many of them probably didn’t like the speech or didn’t agree with it, but they were continuing to engage with us on all sorts of issues that unite us. So again, at the end of the day, I think that, you know, people give all- that is a forum in which you’re supposed to be inviting people to give speeches, not basically a chorus where everyone is saying the exact same thing. That’s not always going to be the case when it’s a collection of democracies where leaders have the right and the privilege to speak their minds in forums such as these.

I hear the word “nazi” used frequently by the left. And mangled history..or even a lack of historical knowledge...to paint conservatives as “nazis”

Id give anything to have a “wayback” machine to send the media back to 1934 Berlin to experience the history of Nazis that was never learned in school. They could also get a lesson on communism while they are there.

The Nazis burned books. They criminalized any speech which the party didn’t approve of. How is that free speech? Only in the mind of a loony leftist.

Speaking of lies, Nazis are not “far right” as the notions of right/left are absurd.

MORE GOVERNMENT .......... LESS GOVERNMENT

Communists .... Nazis..... Two sides of the same coin. Nazis allowed private ownership of industry - but state could step in to take over.

The American legacy media is lost, maybe irreparably. Based upon Margaret Brennan's comments, they have no insight.

Genocide in Nazi Germany was the product of group think as dictated by the non-free speech propaganda arm of the German Nazi government. There was no free speech. Our legacy media is way closer to this in its desire to control the narrative and to influence rather than truthfully report than it is to a truly free speech driven accurate and truthful media.

The non-legacy media is markedly more accurate and thoughtful, and you can pick/choose and compare - thus allowing true exchange and consideration of ideas.

I’m glad that the Republicans are finally starting to get on board with the idea of speaking up to defend one another. That’s one of the RATs strengths; they stick up for one another. A little more of this and maybe managing the Republican party won’t be like herding cats anymore.

Between this bat-guano crazy exchange and the one leading up to ‘I really don’t care, Margaret” she MUST know she’s become our chew toy.

CBS should be fined for such blatant violation of history and truth

Nazi is an acronym for National Socialist Workers Party. Hardly right wing.

You can find speeches by Hitler screaming about his impression that Capitalism was evil and a threat to the state.

A better question would be:

Does anyone sincerely believe that restricting free speech might have helped prevent the Holocaust?!

CBS should be fined OR lose its license.

The FCC should be destroyed if CBS remains.

In Europe a political party referred to as “far right” is far right. I’m saying this from the perspective that current European leadership is so far left that just about any party would be to their right.

the bigger question is WHY WHY WHY are we wasting time with Margaret? WHY? There are HUNDREDS of free thinking media sources out there that will ask intelligent questions without the virtue signaling from these MSM hacks.

Rubio handled it too diplomatically IMO, he should have called her out for her for lack of knowledge and actually started asking her questions about Nazi Germany
Margie—what position did Joseph Goebbels hold in the Reich?
What year did the Nazi’s secure full power in Germany
When did the Wansee conference take place and where?

I doubt she would have even been able to answer any of them with any accuracy.

By doing interviews with her, we are validating her as a legitimate news source

Indeed the legacy media - this Brennan chick in particular- are completely insane. Captured maybe. That they would take this line of reasoning is ignorant, or complicit in a false narrative There was no free speech in the third reich. They had a ministry of propaganda that told the media what to report. Criticism of the Nazi party was strictly forbidden and enforced with harsh penalties, including imprisonment in a concentration camp or death. Or just sometimes Nazis would just show up at the door of critics and beat the crap out of them.

There was free speech prior to 1933 but the country, suffering from economic depression and the reparations they had to pay for WW1 , elected by a plurality ( not a majority) the Nazi party. Once in power they eroded civil rights systematically to the point that by the time there was a holocaust the entire society was brainwashed and controlled via censorship and propaganda. Almost exactly what some on the left advocate for today.

These days we have a lot of alternate media. Some of it is loony. Some of it is very sober and straight. But back then they had newspapers and radio all controlled or coerced by the government. Our legacy media also appears to be controlled and coerced by the government in one way or another - either by outright partisanship or by selective reporting from “unnamed sources” that toe the government line (or are otherwise opposed to the government but in a partisan way). But we also have cable, YouTube, podcasts, social media, blogs and more to disseminate news and opinion. It is vital that they NOT be censored to avoid a situation similar to the third reich. Europe is making the same mistakes trying to censor and control the flow of information and opinion.

It’s possible Rubio wasn’t sufficiently armed with information on the 3rd reich himself. But yes I agree the ‘Sunday morning circuit’ is anachronistic and officials need to expand their access.

Her master was telling her what to say.

Watch it again- I am betting her halting speech, her words were not hers.

Rubio should have said, “I don’t care, Margaret” to stifle her.

Just curious, what books did the Nazis burn? Were they about a certain topic that may be relevant to us today?
