J.D. Vance rightly warns Europeans against the dark cloud of censorship — and critics freak out
NY Post ^ | Miranda Devine (Op Ed)

The panic that gripped Europe’s political elites after J.D. Vance delivered some overdue home truths in Munich found expression back home in the most embarrassing question ever asked by a network anchor.

Our vice president had accused smug Eurocrats at the Munich Security Conference of abandoning free speech and allowing unchecked migration to roil their countries, warned them to respect their voters and told them America should not bear the primary burden of funding Europe’s security.

“If you’re running in fear of your own voters, there is nothing America can do for you. Nor, for that matter, is there anything that you can do for the American people who elected me and elected President Trump,” he said. “You need democratic mandates to accomplish anything of value.”

Cue apoplexy here and abroad.

The critiques of Vance’s speech all seemed deliberately to miss the point, but the most ridiculous of all came from Vance’s old sparring partner, CBS anchor Margaret Brennan.

While trying to excoriate Secretary of State Marco Rubio over Vance’s message Sunday, Brennan blamed the Nazi Holocaust on . . . wait for it . . . too much free speech. Vance made his appalling remarks, she huffed, while “he was standing in a country where free speech was weaponized to conduct a genocide.”

We left the old world to be free from monarchies and religious persecution. Now we’ve got to purge our country of old world thinking and rule.

Once again Germany and Brennan draw the wrong lesson from the "Hitler time."

Although just this morning at physical therapy for a bad back I encountered a room full of Germans who were entirely in support of vice president Vance and explicitly approved his comments respecting freedom of opinion.

The real significance of Vance's speech should not be underestimated and certainly not dismissed.

Trump is laying out the basis upon which America will defend Europe.

Given the centuries of hostility between Christian and Islamic Civilization it makes one wonder why the Leaders of Europe are now openly importing their long time enemies. What changed?

Democracy has replaced the Kings . If you hold office by buying votes then Islamic immigration fits right in. You have a class of people who fervently believe they have a God given right to the wealth of people outside their group . Jizya, the tax imposed on infidels , is as old as Islam.

J.D. Vance made a speech warning the Euro-weenies about the perils of censorship.

Their first reaction was to figure out a way to censor him.

What changed?

Europe discarded the Christian God and, therefore, it is no longer incentivized to save Christian civilization from the threat of Islam, leaving only defense of the nation.

But too much of Europe no longer believes in the legitimacy of the nation state, therefore, much of Europe is no longer incentivized to defend the structure of the nation. The nation state is in need of strong defense given the moral philosophy of Islam but Europe is not persuaded that the God of Christ or the nation state are worth defending.

In keeping with Europe's postmodern philosophy, Europeans have ceased reproducing, creating a need among employers to import labor. As Europe slides into recession this demand supply ratio for labor will reverse but for the moment this entrepreneurial class of Europeans favors filling jobs with cheap foreign labor.

Some politicians believe they can prosper by playing off groups against each other and immigrants are grist for that mill.

Despite these impediments to rational immigration policy, it is clear that the trend against unbridled immigration is gaining momentum and the politicians who have until now successfully fended off the desires of their own people with accusations of racism are losing traction.

I recall discussions with my German neighbors at the time of Angela Merkel's unleashing hoards of Muslim immigrants when, to a person my neighbors defended the move as an antidote to racism and a proper legacy of the Nazi era. These arguments are less widespread today.

Trump is laying out the basis preconditions upon which America will defend Europe.

If you would permit me...

I generally avoid discussing politics with my German neighbors - even less with the occasional American (serviceman / civilian contractor) I encounter here. They are not amenable to rational discourse. (I try to comfort myself by arguing that they can't possibly be a representative slice of the American public.)

Outside of my "Leuchtturm" group and the small political organization (Liste) I helped found here, I pretty much keep to myself.

Can't imagine conducting any substantive discussions with people in a back-specialist's waiting room! (/good-natured ribbing)

Regards,

Thankfully the critics are free to freak out publicly. If the shoe was on the other foot they would censor this post.

Yes, true. He is also defending US tech companies. These companies don’t want to spend $20 billion a year monitoring speech and enacting censorship policies. The Zuck had a lapse of reason, Dorsey didn’t even know how bad things were at Twitter until Musk stepped in. The people at Google better get on board I’ve already moved about half my searches to various non Google AI sites and other streaming services are moving in against YouTube. Even people who publish on YT also publish on other sites to protect their content from total censorship .

The only country that thinks it can sell the West on the virtues of censorship is China.

Heck, I bet they think they could even defeat Islam - and probably could.

When a person KNOWS they are in the absolute wrong and they cannot offer a cogent debate point for their position the only weapon they have in censorship, radicle, fake outrage to distract from the actual content of the debate just like a 6 year old schoolyard bully does when he complains about all the blood covering him from his victim.

The EU and the UK are holding an “emergency meeting” today on Trump’s attempt to end the Ukraine/Russia thing without them.

But the freakout isn’t really about Ukraine, is it.

It’s about Europe using American taxpayer money to keep their welfare states afloat and now Trump has turned off the spigot.

The urge to censorship...the arrogance of Elites in thinking that only they can reasonably determine what is “acceptable” to discuss openly which is of course just a mask for maintaining their own power and control is nothing new on the Continent. Indeed I’d say its their historical norm. They will inevitably cite Hitler and claim that’s what they’re against, but in reality it wasn’t much different under the Nazis. There too the elites determined what the common people could say and what was unacceptable and there too they punished political dissidents for their thoughts.

Vance’s speech is for the ages.

Everyone should read or watch it.

Amazing. He puts NATO and all of Western Civilization on the table for Europe to save or reject, and Euroweenies are rejecting it.

No, I bet they didn’t like it one bit. They are going to pay us back by having a meeting and not inviting us, and cry all the way to the bank depositing our checks.
