One of NASA's stranded astronauts has revealed she has lost the ability to perform several basic tasks after being stranded in space for eight months.
Sunita Williams admitted this week that she has forgotten what it's like to walk after spending 234 days in microgravity.
'I've been up here long enough, right now I've been trying to remember what it's like to walk. I haven't walked. I haven't sat down. I haven't laid down,' she said during a video call with students at Needham High School in Massachusetts on Monday.
Williams, 59 and her crewmate, Barry Wilmore, 62, were supposed to spend eight days on the ISS when they embarked on their mission on June 5, but the Boeing capsule that took them was plagued by technical issues.
The capsule has since returned to Earth empty, leaving the two astronauts stuck on the ISS until at least late March when they can catch a ride home on SpaceX's Crew-9 spacecraft.
President Donald Trump said 'the two brave astronauts' were 'virtually abandoned by the Biden administration' and asked Elon Musk and SpaceX to 'go get' them.
'Elon will soon be on his way. Hopefully, all will be safe,' the president said. 'Good luck Elon!!!'
The 53-year-old billionaire vowed in a post to retrieve Wilmore and Sunita Williams 'as soon as possible.'

That’s the spirit!
Their going to have a lot sick leave and vacation banked by the time they are done.
I think people should try living in a station under the ocean for practice before we send them out to space. Our ocean is a vast frontier that beckons explorers imho.
This doesn’t sound good.
They’re both gonna retire as Generals, with some kind of very large cash settlement. That along with the money they’ll collect from the talk show circuit should hold them over until they can collect social security.
Ok, everybody fess up. How many thought it was walking and lying down?
“Their going to have a lot sick leave and vacation banked by the time they are done.”
Not to mention the overtime! :)
I recall our astronauts had treadmills & other exercise equipment on the space station to prevent them from losing muscle tone. Not there anymore?
Zero
True, the universe is trying to kill us at every turn. All the more reason to spread humanity to avoid all of us being on today’s target.
I thought they had machines they used to simulate walking
They’re going to have…
Opps
Oh, I thought it was related to something usually relating to lying down...
Not as much as you think. You age less in space and they'll have to deduct space time from earth time and divide by three. They'll end up taking Trumps buyout offer for government employees because they did not return to work in the office by the deadline.
I’ve been hearing about spacewalks since I was a kid. Get out and spacewalk a little each day, problem solved.
Going from New York to California is a brutal trip—by horse and buggy.
We need the correct tech for the job—obviously not ready for prime time...yet.
We have the oceans to explore right down here. Only send unmanned vehicles to space. We don’t need to live there, we need to live here. And we won’t be living underwater either, it’s just a waste of time and resources to try to trans-atmosphere Mankind.
