This is very curious as well as the timing.
Forbes -—> Latest Chinese Drone Update Could Cause Chaos Across U.S.
“Chinese drone makers DJI announced a software update this week for operators in the U.S.: they are taking the guardrails off all their drones. From January 13th, the geofencing function which prevented the drones from flying in restricted areas such as airports and military based will no longer operate.”
“Instead, when flying in a restricted area the drone will simply issue a warning message, “placing control back in the hands of the drone operators” as the company puts it.”

I bet there will soon be some serious clay pigeon shooting in restricted air space.
Is this an admission that our government doesn’t want to or can’t control ‘drone’ operation?
What’s that at the end of the shotgun?
Looks like a shotgun suppressor to me.
Well, I suppose.
This change seems like a negative one for the US and somewhat provocative since before the change DJI drones would not violate the geo-fence and now they can since that protection has been removed by the manufacturer. Perhaps I misunderstand but that’s how it looks to me.
I thought headline said DJT did that.
I thought headline said DJT did that.
DJI was monitoring the use of the Drones to maintain the geofencing, the US government told them they couldn't monitor the use of the drones in the US due to security, so DJI indicated they are now no longer able to maintain the geofencing and has thus stopped providing it.
Ok, thanks for the explanation. Makes sense.
How freaking dumb can our government be? Relying on China to protect our president!
“DJI, a Chinese-based technology company, got rid of its geofence software, which stopped people from flying drones over the White House, runways, power plants and during public emergencies.”
DJI apps are spyware. Learned that years ago, when I used wireshark to track what they were doing on my network. Their spyware “phones home” regularly, in bursts. Usually very late at night.
They vacuum up all the data they can, then send the info to China.
Should be banned in the US.
Wireshark didn’t show you WHAT that traffic was, did it? Geofencing required handshaking whenever connected, in order to function effectively.
Your accusation lacks any proof.
I am unconvinced without data showing actual compromise.
I did similar checks before making a substantial investment in personal DJI drones, and did not find the data contained in their comms traffic to be suspicious.
I also did not find them transmitting anything when they were not turned on.

I’m just a couple blocks away from an international airport’s No Drone Zone.
DJI’s GeoFencing easily kept me out of trouble, preventing me from exceeding the zone’s surrounding 200 foot altitude limitation while keeping me out of the no drone zone completely.
Now it’s on me to insure that compliance.
I think I’m actually going to miss geofencing. No more stress free flying...
