CBS' Dave Malkoff explains how firefighters were able to save NASA's JPL from the Eaton Fire. However, many people who work there lost their homes during the disaster.

JPL receives data from over 40 spacecraft, even Voyager.

It looks like they had a pretty close call, but, they do have some firefighting resources on site.

Yeah, there have been too many of those images this past week, that’s for sure...

Speaking of which, the same station (KCAL) did a piece with a lot of overhead views of the destruction. In some areas there was another factor we have not heard much of: The structures are so tightly packed that if one catches fire, in those winds, anything downwind until there is some sort of break or serious barrier is likely doomed. When the area is rebuilt, perhaps wider spacing should be required?

JPL is literally next to a reservoir. Full? Dry?

JPL is also in Pasadena, which is about 40 miles from the huge fire storms near Santa Monica and Malibu.

The Getty Museum saved itself. I’m still checking if the Griffith Observatory is safe yet. If any good comes out of this perhaps it is the beginning of the end for one party rule in California.

Hooray for industrial firefighters. I did it at a rocket engine test site in the hills above LA for 13 years before joining a city department.
