A strong earthquake shook a high-altitude region of western China and areas of Nepal on Tuesday, damaging hundreds of houses, littering streets with rubble and killing at least 95 people in Tibet. Many others were trapped as dozens of aftershocks shook the remote region.
Rescue workers climbed mounds of broken bricks, some using ladders in heavily damaged villages, as they searched for survivors. Videos posted by China’s Ministry of Emergency Management showed two people being carried out on stretchers by workers treading over the uneven debris from collapsed homes.
At least 130 people have been injured in the earthquake-hit area in Tibet on the Chinese side of the border, state broadcaster CCTV reported, citing the vice mayor of Shigatse city.

Strong earthquake kills at least 95 people in western China near Mount Everest
BEIJING (AP) — A strong earthquake shook a high-altitude region of western China and areas of Nepal on Tuesday, damaging hundreds of houses, littering streets with rubble and killing at least 95 people in Tibet.
More than 1,000 homes were damaged in the barren and relatively sparsely populated region, CCTV said. In video posted by the broadcaster, fallen building debris littered streets and crushed cars.
This was in occupied Tibet, not China.
A “high-altitude region of western China” - that’s what we used to call TIBET.
Yep, but I have to go with the titles as they are
I know. Not your fault, but FOX ought to know that the Chinese money is showing...
The epicentre of the quake was Shigatse, one of the holiest cities of Tibet...Shigatse is the seat of the Panchen Lama, a significant figure in Tibetan Buddhism, whose spiritual authority is second only to the Dalai Lama.

A week or so ago, there was a posting here about the new massive dam power project that China has approved to do on the Yarlung Tsangpo River. This project is about 3 times the size of the 3 Gorges Dam Project.....
https://freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/4286672/posts Here is a link to the BBC article that was included in this posting... https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/crmn127kmr4o
A quick glance of a map shows that the dams for the power project are to the east of the Shigatse earthquake zone (say about 250 miles but it seems like the dammed up river is just to the north of this area (say about 50 to 100 miles). The BBC article that is linked to the above FR posting says this.....
“The site of the development is located along an earthquake-prone tectonic plate boundary. Chinese researchers have also previously flagged concerns that such extensive excavation and construction in the steep and narrow gorge would increase the frequency of landslides.
“Earthquake-induced landslides and mud-rock flows are often uncontrollable and will also pose a huge threat to the project,” a senior engineer from Sichuan provincial geological bureau said in 2022.”
I would imagine the bigger concern will be about the geological stability in the area where the dam is to be installed but one has to wonder how the stability of the entire region will be affected.....
The current 11th Panchen Lama, Gedhun Choekyi Nyima, was recognized by the 14th Dalai Lama on 14 May 1995. Three days later, the six-year-old Panchen Lama was kidnapped by the Chinese government and his family was taken into custody. The Chinese government instead named Gyaincain Norbu as the 11th Panchen Lama. Their nomination has been widely rejected by Buddhists in Tibet and abroad, while governments have called for information about and the release of the Panchen Lama. Gedhun Choekyi Nyima has never been seen publicly since 1995.
I’ve always been fascinated with Mount Everest and the dangers involved with climbing it.
When people die up there, their bodies get left where they fall because it’s too dangerous to attempt to retrieve it.
wow
FOX doesn’t care.
BTW, there may be one mother of a geological event brewing in Ethiopia if anyone’s interested.
Giant magma intrusion in the Awash Fentale region...
A local lawyer came into a bunch of money several years ago (I don’t know him but knew a guy who did)
He decided to try to climb it. Don’t know if he succeeded (I think he didn’t).
Came back alive, though. Immediately sold all of the gear.
Wasn’t going to try a second time.
I have no interest don’t care if I was worth $500 billion.
Besides, I saw the K2 movie and that was enough for me.
I have no desire to climb it either, I would go up to one of the base camps to see how everything works and the type of people who attempt it.
“Near Mount Everest” is criminally occupied TIBET!
The earth quake produced an increase of the Everest peak elevation of 37 cm
