There were always calls to defund the Corporation for Public Broadcasting but it never happened. As soon as conservatives would start talking about media bias and cutting CPB's budget, liberals would roll out Big Bird as the symbol of what conservatives wanted to cut. Of course this only proved the point. Conservatives weren't against Big Bird, they were against the news bias that routinely permeated the adult fare. Painting conservatives as anti-Big Bird was sort of par for the course at CPB.
For decades, NPR and PBS have overcome similar threats. But this year, “the attention and intensity” of the calls to defund public media seem greater, said Michael Isip, the president and chief executive of KQED, which operates NPR and PBS stations in the San Francisco Bay Area.
NPR and PBS stations are bracing for the fight. After the election, leaders of NPR’s biggest member stations circulated a report that warned “it would be unwise to assume that events will play out as they have in the past,” with regard to their federal funding. PBS received an update on the situation from political consultants at a board meeting in early December. And station directors in some states are already making their case to legislators.
With the 2nd term of Donald Trump and Elon Musk running DOGE, there's a possibility that defunding CPB could actually happen this time around. And of course, the NY Times frames it as Elon vs. Elmo.
I'm willing to bet we'll see Elmo and Big Bird being trotted out fairly soon with a special message for Elon. This is a very old playbook at this point. PBS has been doing this since at least the Nixon administration.

In addition to defunding we need the next step—revoking the local broadcast licenses of all public television stations.
They are propaganda organs of the left—and do not serve the public interest.
Someone like Bill Gates will probably be guilted into providing a rescue donation of $50 million bucks.
Walking around money, for Bill.
They have SPONSORS AND DONORS!
I’ll believe it when I see it.
America (and the world) is addicted to printed, fiat money, courtesy of the Federal Reserve, and the massive debt and spending it supports.
That’s the strongest opioid there is. The entire US Government and all its cronies and dependents can’t live without it.
No more tax dollars for this Democrat propaganda machine.
I’d love to see a video of Elan punching out Elmo.
The taxpayers are already funding ABC, CBS, CNN, FOX, NBC, and the rest of them.
That would be $50 million less he would have for creating poisonous vaccines.
See post 2—with no licenses their TV stations go off the air.
The radio stations may be tough to shut down—but they could be banned from using the NPR name.
The last time that I listened to NPR on regular basis, was in the 1990s and they were actually to the right of the US Networks, often reporting on important stuff that the US Networks were covering up - such as the impact on civilians in Belgrade during our Illegal bombing of Serbia, in order to sever Kosovo out of Serbia.
But times change and my understanding that they are as hard-left as any other network, so adios!
PBS and NPR were one of the great liberal projects of the 60s; the three networks controlled everything and it was that public money, and lots of it, could be used to provide quality television not otherwise available. Two things happened: 1 - PBS and NPR turned into a cesspool of leftism with overpaid hacks and managers floating on our money while spitting in our faces; and 2 - there are now massive numbers of alternatives on cable, the Internet and other electronic media. Public Broadcastings’ time to go has long gone; Reagan tried to zero them out in his first budget in 1981 and the Georgetown liberals were able to convince Rinos to stop it. I hope Trump sticks to zero budgeting for this bunch this year and let them live off the billionaire contributors.
Is that the same New York Times that lied about Biden's mental problems for three years?
Both should have been shut down a LONG TIME AGO.
No thanks, I like PBS for some programming. The news reporting is tedious.
NPR maybe you could kick in the teeth if done the right way.
Better to just let DOGE audit both, and just punch down to drive away c-suite and 'talent' and make them cry -- maybe find something criminal and then grind on that for the mid-terms.
Both serve a purpose -- Leftards have to go somewhere in media, they have to have a marginal outlet or we would have nothing to grind against.
They eat their own far more often than Conservatives. NPR in particular fueled the outright hatred against Biden's feebleness as part of Nanzi's ploy to get Biden out to save (steal) downticket Senate races.

Gingrich Foresees a World Without Public Broadcasting

I hate to see so called public broadcasting being silenced but I understand it’s largely an organ for the left. I would hope that destroying public broadcasting could be avoided if realignment or some form of reorganization or oversight could be achieved.
Let the Henson company pay for it.
Why are taxpayers funding a multi-million dollar business?
PBS and NPR were always low hanging fruit. They should have been defunded decades ago. Feckless Republicans were unwilling to defund any of the left-wing institutions. Planned Parenthood, Voice of America, the United Nations....
