The "peaceful transfer of power" is a lot quicker in Syria than in America. Some perfunctory looting of the presidential palace, and next thing you know Mr and Mrs Assad and the kids are settling into their far more manageable studio apartment in Moscow. Before his mid-life career switch to murderous dictator, young Bashar was a respected London ophthalmologist. Yet he failed to read the writing on the wall. On the BBC some or other expert was even using the phrase "Arab Spring" in a non-parodic context.
This would be the same Arab Spring that delivered Egypt from strongman Mubarak to strongman Sisi (a counter-intuitive name for a strongman but it seems to be working for him; the first time I heard it I assumed the "general sissy" was Egyptian intelligence's code name for Obama).
This would be the same Arab Spring that delivered Libya's ports into the hands of Isis and bazillions of "asylum seekers" onto the shores of Europe, thereby leaving Sweden in nothing flat with a worse "gender" imbalance in its youth cohort than China after forty years of its "one child" policy.
The same Arab Spring that permanently destabilised one of the least worst Middle Eastern states, Jordan, with millions of Syrian "refugees".
Ah, but Arab Springs eternal. The jihadists now in charge of Damascus were, not so long ago, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Isis, but don't worry, the expert analysts assure us the leadership has become far less "ideological" and far more "nuanced". Is John Kerry doing a little light consulting work for them?

The trajectory in the Middle East seems to always follow the path of throwing out one devil to be replaced by another. People throwing a party for the liberation of the Syrians are clueless.

Yep. For example, the Shah of Iran was an autocrat. But his replacement (the radical mullahs) are much worse.
I don’t feel sorry for Assad at all. He probably still has access to billion of $$ in Swiss bank accounts. He and his family will likely live a very comfortable, protected life in Russia. And not in some cramped studio apartment, but likely a sprawling Dacha near Moscow. Not a bad retirement. My guess is that, aside from the shame of losing his regime, he is relieved at not being responsible for a sh!t-h0l@ country. Maybe he will even restart his eye doctor practice if he gets bored spending all his $$.

I suppose the frigid Moscow weather will take some getting used to for the Assads too. Oh, well. I’m guessing someone else will clear his driveway after a snowstorm.

From what I’ve read, the Rebels don’t seem to be acting stupidly. They seem to be well aware of how tenuous their position is and the need for Western buy in for their regime. At least in the short term. They are also anti-Iranian and will shut down the land pipeline of weapons to Hezbollah. They likely also realize the hazards of picking a fight with Israel. Ditto for ethnic cleansing of Druze, Christians in Syria. They know the world is watching. Plus Turkey is holding their leash, which is nominally not a bad thing.
So, in the short-mid term, this could be a good thing. Time will tell.

The North Syrian Kurds are the group who you can trust and deal with.
They paid a high price in blood, while crushing ISIS in Syria, with US help.
They had already made a deal with Assad for autonomy.
Our US army hit 75 ISIS targets (ISIS was under Turkey’s control) in a few days. Nobody is talking about that. It did happen.
NO nation should ever again expect American blood to be spilled for them.
Each country is responsible its own defense. See Ukraine’s failure, and learn!

I think this Turkey moving into the northern Levant to put pressure on Israel in Lebanon. I just don’t like the look of it. And the leader is a radical who will be just as bad or worse than Assad.
That said, Assad let his army fall apart, so it’s his fault.
Out of the frying pan, into the fire.
