The leftist media are excited about a long-ago sexual assault claim an unnamed woman filed against Pete Hegseth. The police refused to press charges, but Hegseth, by then a well-known and wealthy TV personality, paid the woman some money. Hegseth contends that the sex was consensual, that the woman was the aggressor, and that he paid her to make her go away. I may be a lousy feminist here, but knowing how the world works, I think it’s just as likely that Hegseth’s version of events is true. That being the case, the entire thing should be disregarded moving forward.
I come into this with strong biases. First, although numerous academic articles discount it, “gray rape” exists.
Gray rape happens when young women have consensual sex with someone and then, filled with post-coital regret (and often bullied by feminist friends), claim they were raped. Indeed, some women make a lifestyle out of their alleged victimhood.
Reports of campus rapes have often followed this pattern. A classic example of this pattern is what happened to Ben Feibleman. Unsurprisingly, Columbia settled.

We definitely need a “not so fast” movement. Hopefully we are at the start line of throwing cancel culture over the side. I tend to believe Hegseth’s side of the story too, but it worries me that he was so easily compromised, though he was younger at the time.

Hegseth does have problems with fidelity, having cheated on his second wife and children. Hopefully he got his act together for the sake of his kids.

Peter Brian Hegseth (born June 6, 1980) is an American television presenter, author, and Army National Guard officer who is the nominee for United States Secretary of Defense in Donald Trump’s second cabinet. A political commentator for Fox News since 2014 and weekend co-host of Fox & Friends from 2017 to 2024, he was previously the executive director of Vets for Freedom and Concerned Veterans for America.
Hegseth has been active in conservative and Republican politics since his undergraduate days at Princeton University.
Hegseth was born on June 6, 1980, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the son of Brian, a basketball coach, and Penny Hegseth. He was raised in nearby Forest Lake and is of Norwegian descent on both sides of the family. He attended Forest Lake Area High School, where he played football and basketball, graduating in 1999 as valedictorian of his class.
Hegseth went on to receive his Bachelor of Arts in politics at Princeton University in 2003.
Following graduation from Princeton in 2003, Hegseth joined Bear Stearns as an equity capital markets analyst and was also commissioned as an infantry officer in the Minnesota National Guard. In 2004 his unit was called to Guantanamo Bay Naval Base, under the operational control of the 3rd Battalion, 187th Infantry Regiment 101st Airborne Division, where he served as an infantry platoon leader and was awarded the Army Commendation Medal. Shortly after returning from Cuba, Hegseth volunteered to serve in Baghdad and Samarra, where he served first as an infantry platoon leader and later as Civil–Military Operations Officer. During his time in Iraq, he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, and a second Army Commendation Medal.
He returned to active duty in 2012 as a captain. He deployed to Afghanistan with the Minnesota Army National Guard and acted as a senior counterinsurgency instructor at the Counterinsurgency Training Center in Kabul.[citation needed]
In 2014, Hegseth was promoted to the rank of major and left active duty to be assigned to the Army Individual Ready Reserve.
In 2019, Hegseth rejoined the National Guard after five years in the Individual Ready Reserve. In 2020, Hegseth volunteered as one of the up-to-25,000 National Guard troops authorized by the Pentagon to be put on active duty to protect the inauguration of Joe Biden on January 20, 2021, but was one of 12 soldiers removed from that mission. Hegseth attributed his removal from the assignment to a “Jerusalem Cross tattoo, which is just a Christian symbol.” Hegseth said his National Guard superiors determined his tattoos were connected to extremism. Hegseth had also been reported by a fellow national guardsman in his unit as a potential “insider threat”. Hegseth chose to leave active duty as a result of this, and his last day in uniform was March 31, 2021.
In January 2024, he officially separated from the National Guard’s Individual Ready Reserve.

Hegseth and his first wife, Meredith Schwarz, divorced in 2009. He married his second wife, Samantha Deering, in 2010; they have three children.
In August 2017, while still married to Deering, Hegseth had a daughter with Fox executive producer Jennifer Rauchet, with whom he was having an extramarital relationship. He and Deering divorced in August 2017. Hegseth and Rauchet, who has three young children from her first marriage, married in August 2019.
In October 2017, Hegseth was accused of sexual assault in a hotel room after speaking at a California Federation of Republican Women event in Monterey, California. Hegseth reportedly dismissed the allegations as a “he-said, she-said” dispute about a consensual encounter. No charges were filed in the case. Hegseth paid the accuser, an 30-year-old conservative group staffer, who had alleged Hegseth had raped her, as a result of a non-disclosure agreement in 2020.

Of course this doesn't have anything to do with how good he is in bed or in the office. It has everything to do with the mess he's made. Admirable in one way, a loose cannon in another. These things have a way of influencing our American character. He's 44.
