Will Declining Truck Inventories Lead CARB to Amend Heavy-Duty Electric Truck Regulations? CA’s truck regulations cut off the supply of combustion engine trucks before truck manufacturers produced electric alternatives
California Globe ^ | October 23, 2024 | Katy Grimes

In 2023, California Governor Gavin Newsom proudly declared an “clean air” policy which has the potential to put the state’s drivers in harms way:

“California became the first jurisdiction in the world today to end the sales of traditional combustion trucks by 2036, creating a path to 100% zero emission medium heavy-duty trucks on the roads in California by 2045. California also became the first state in the nation to implement emissions standards for trains,” Newsom said.

“The future happens here first, and California is once again showing the world what real climate action looks like.”

I work in California agriculture. This will shut down California agriculture. The world has been down this road before

Holodomor, man-made famine that convulsed the Soviet republic of Ukraine from 1932 to 1933, peaking in the late spring of 1933. It was part of a broader Soviet famine (1931–34) that also caused mass starvation in the grain-growing regions of Soviet Russia and Kazakhstan. The Ukrainian famine, however, was made deadlier by a series of political decrees and decisions that were aimed mostly or only at Ukraine.

I’ll bet Gruesome Newsom could pick up some old 20 mule team wagons to haul incoming goods to market.

Cutting off sales of internal combustion trucks is a certain way of turning the sixth largest economy in the world to a Cuba-type economy. IOW, California would become the least productive state and most other states would overtake California. Unfortunately, California would also affect the general economy of the U.S. and China would easily overtake the U.S. and the biggest economy in the world. The U.S. would have become weakened and with a weakened economy, our enemies would become emboldened and the world will become a more dangerous place.

Xi will put an end to such nonsense.

The Chinese could simply build new ports in Mexico and US longshoremen would have to get new sources of income.

I suspect if elected, Kamala Harris has a prominent position in her cabinet for Gavin Newsom - such as “czar of climate change” or head of the EPA.

Newsom - and Harris - will happily bring California’s draconian mandates nation-wide, such as gas at ≈ $5.50/gallon, carbon exchanges or heavy taxation to pay for “green energy.”

Coming up I-80 through Donner Pass in the winter will be fun. So, does the no “fossil” fuel mandate apply to freight trains as well? Looks like Reno will become a major end point for a lot of goods to transfer to EVs headed into cali. Oh, just in case, there is no “net zero”.

Remember when Saturn producecd an electric car to meet California’s demand for 20% electric fleet? CARB reneged on the mandate and Saturn (as a non-union company) got screwed.

Stupid on a massive scale...

But, what happens when (esp N Ca) has their fires. And the power goes out.

And an accident happens..
Tow trucks are needed to clear roads.

But as they are now electric, they need to recharge at some point during the picking up or transporting of the damaged vehicles.

But, there is no power and nowhere to recharge?

Thing is, pols like Gavin Newsom do not care - they are driven around in gas-powered limos (three for Gavin Newsom, one in front of his limo, one behind) - they don’t have to worry about gas prices or utilities, which are paid for by taxpayers.

Some of the rich folks, like Newsom, use private fire brigades in case of fire - he’s got that covered as well.

He’s a total hypocrite.

“As James V. Lacy and Katy Grimes point out in their short, bracing new book, “California’s War Against Donald Trump: Who Wins? Who Loses?” our progressive leaders “have decided that rather than work on fixing their own state, it is more important to declare war on Donald Trump and all of his policies.” The book is not a polemic or a screed. Rather, it makes an argument that the war against Trump is really a war against constitutional government. Our federal system wasn’t built to allow a powerful, populous state like ours to effectively dictate policy to the rest of the country.” -Ben Boychuk, Sacramento Bee, October 20, 2017.

Other States

States that currently follow California’s vehicle rules are expected to adopt these regulations through their own rulemakings, gaining the clean air and climate benefits the regulation delivers. These states constitute about 40% of the nation’s new car sales.

That is their goal. The enviros grabbed power with intent to take CA back to the way it was 500 yrs ago. The elites can keep their coastal palaces; everyone else needs to go.

There will never be electric alternatives. At least not unless the electricity is provided by embedded road elements. About 100 years from now.

Shown here is a Tesla Semi tractor. They are being purchased for day in day out use by companies operating their own distribution fleets. They are not necessarily currently replacing common carrier over the road or transcontinental trucks.

The Tesla customer frequently noted is PepsiCo in I believe Kansas where the electric tractors pull trailers to various company delivery points every day. One tractor apparently is able to travel a thousand miles per day in multiple driver shifts. The battery can be topped up during the ordinary down time at driver change/reloading.

The California utopian dream for general over the road ET use is not presently adopted by the actual trucking companies. The range of 500 miles does correlate with the maximum driver hours allowed however.

There are a few other manufacturers of electric tractors but I have not seen the same reviews for fleet usage like Tesla. The Tesla tractors are being produced and being sold not only as tests, but in day to day use
