When the rubber met the road and the progressive climate change warriors in Silicon Valley needed energy to power their AI and data centers, you might be surprised to learn they didn’t opt for the “renewable” energy technologies they’ve been forcing down our throats (wind turbines and solar panels), using the weight of big government, but instead went for…reliability and affordability.
Or maybe it’s not all that unexpected, considering these are the same people who fly from climate conference to climate conference in personal private jets and gorge themselves on Kobe beef while calling on us to limit ourselves to crickets and lab-grown “meat” mash.
Today, Jo Nova at her eponymous blog reported on the news that executives at three of the biggest names in the tech world, Google, Microsoft, and Amazon, have been buying up nuclear reactors to supply the tremendous amount of energy required to run AI programs and data collection/storage facilities:
Two weeks ago it was Microsoft reviving Three Mile Island’s nuclear plant. Now Google is buying seven small modular reactors, and Amazon is spending $500 million USD on part of a nuclear energy company.
If you weren’t aware, AI and data centers consume an unbelievable amount of energy; from Goldman Sachs earlier this year:
On average, a ChatGPT query needs nearly 10 times as much electricity to process as a Google search.
[snip]
Now, as the pace of efficiency gains in electricity use slows and the AI revolution gathers steam, Goldman Sachs Research estimates that data center power demand will grow 160% by 2030.

What could possibly go wrong?
As we are all miserably aware, these three companies are radically left, both in their company mission and the personal ideology of their executives, and they use their weight to influence policy—they’re leading proponents of the progressive “climate change” narrative. While they’ve certainly “invested” a bit into the “zero-carbon” energy schemes, they abandoned their positions for personal gain when they needed reliability and affordability—the very reason we conservatives have insisted that nuclear energy is a great and clean option.
Does that mean we “unwashed masses” will be afforded the same opportunities? Or will we still be saddled inefficient and unaffordable?
I suspect the latter. If the Democrats have their way.
ogawd they even made a movie.
Lots.
They are only interested in their own interests. They were happy to virtue signal about “green power” until it occurred to them they needed a lot of power to run their AI. Then they turn on a dime, and start the chant of “nuclear power is good”.
That’s why demonrats must lose hugely on Election Day.
So in other words...their hypocrisy on full display for everyone. Good.
**ogawd they even made a movie.**
Enjoyed that flick. Carley Soon showed off a big butt in that one.
bkmk
I fully suspect that as soon as these plant go live.
That VERY shortly after, you will see Ultra high end gated communities suddenly appear along the power lines from the reactor to the AI farms.
And/or island/ walled off communites powered by “private” reactors. Electricity, desalinisatione etc.. near completely self sufficient. And well guarded.
A few, large, targeted donations to a lefty green candidate’s war chest, or cash handed out under the table will keep them quiet.
"Rules for thee, not for me."
They’re special. They need cheap, reliable power. The rest of us, oh well, we’ll have to make do.
Isn’t it something how so called environmentalists are willing to put the fate of the environment in the worst possible pearl in order to run their AI. 100,000 years of possible environmental destruction so that the word can be run and controlled by AI(The beast). What is even sadder is that most conservatives approve.
Not liking those predictions, which sounds like it will happen. Gotta go chop some wood to cheer myself up now.
If you believe that any left-wing pack of arseholes will allow any nuclear power plants to operate — well, you are truly dumb. Nuclear is dead in the US. Has been for years.
Oh, and BTWay, I am a nuclear engineer — 30+ years experience.
Mostly because the easy and affordable "efficiency gains" have already been achieved, and we have reached a point of diminishing returns. No matter how efficient you make energy use, you still need some power to run the operation.
This basic fact also impacts our collective ability to power the new hotness of electric cars.
I must admit that I find a certain amount of schadenfreude watching left wing assholes turning to nuclear power to protect their capitalistic bottom line, after fear mongering for years about how dangerous nuclear power is in any form.
Personally I’d say nuclear power in the US is not quite dead, but it is on life support. Retired nuclear engineer here with 30+ years in the nuclear industry.
What could possibly go wrong?

Whe have nuclear power and the grid. We are planning to DISTRIBUTE our nuclear reactors where it will be exhorbitantly expensive to protect them from terrorists. We are doing this while we are allowing unvetted people from every country to walk across our border illegally. We are planning to DISTRIBUTE OUR NUCLEAR REACTORS because of climate change, while China and India are building many, many coal plants.
This plan, and our open borders are just insane! This is a very foolish plan.
