What's wrong with equality of outcome?
American Thinker ^ | 10/08/2024 | Kris Larsen

Kamala Harris is in sync with socialists and communists when she speaks fondly of a hypothetical society where "we all end up in the same place." This equality of outcome scheme (as opposed to equality of opportunity) flies in the face of human nature, given that individuals have different abilities, levels of intelligence, work ethics, familial environments, etc. - all of which guarantee unequal outcomes.

Any combination of hard work, intelligence, aptitude for employment related tasks, and/or choosing a trade or profession that accommodates market demands will often make someone more economically successful than others, assuming an absence of institutional regulation.

By contrast, a society where we all end up in the same place contravenes this natural order. Here is a thought experiment for you. Let's take a math class. Ellen earned a 93, Jack an 87, Floyd a 71, Mary a 67, Freda a 38, and Rick a 22. They all had equal opportunity by virtue of enrolling in that class, but had different results, perhaps owing to any combination of intelligence, work ethic, aptitude for mathematics, and/or degree of emphasis placed on education in their respective homes. In any event, each student earned his or her grade, and results varied.

Ending up in the same place requires institutional interference. Applying this ideology to the six math students would mean giving each a 63 -- the average of (93 + 87 + 71 + 67 + 38 + 22) รท 6. Is it fair or just to subtract Ellen's mark by 30, Jack's by 24, Floyd's by 8, and Mary's by 4, so as to increase Freda's grade by 25, and Rick's by 41? Congratulations: we have set up a scenario where competence is punished and failure rewarded.

It gets worse. The competent to high achievers lose their incentive to produce at above average levels. Many will grow discouraged, put forth less effort, and slide into mediocrity -- or worse. And the "loafers" learn that they will be rewarded over and above what they earn. They will see no need to improve. The joke is on everyone in the class when the stronger students regress to mediocrity and the overall average drops to something substantially less than 63.

that is their goal.........................

except not everyone is equal. It is a two-class society, the elite and the non-elite.

The ONLY place I can think of where the “EQUALITY” works is on a ROWING TEAM.

Because "equality of outcome" is an impossible, unreachable fantasy.

A two-seat bicycle or one of those mobile bar things you see drunks peddling around on in downtown areas. I saw one the other day in the Broadway area of Nashville where only 2 out of the 7 participants were peddling, they had to turn on the engine.

One problem is how do you segment the outcomes. Are Jews white? Germans the same as Italians? Japanese the same as Chinese? Etc? Mixed races?

...”we all end up in the same place.”

I can only think of two places one may end up in..... Heaven or Hell. Choose wisely.

What's wrong with equality of outcome?

Because the end outcome is zero.

you cant make everyone equally rich, you can only make people equally poor.

and those that put in the effort end up equally to those who put in no effort.

THATS WHATS WRONG WITH IT

At the fundamental human level, it just cannot occur. There are too many permutations. You can have identical twins, one is lazy, the other is industrious.

There is no way to have “equality of outcomes” without penalizing someone who should be rewarded, and at the same time, rewarding someone who should be penalized.

Of all the things championed by the Leftists and Marxists, “equity of outcome” has to be one of the most brutally wrong “ideas”...

And the loafers will vote in droves for equality of outcome, because they get something for nothing in the short term. Socialism is very popular in the short term, until it crashes. As the article notes, socialism ultimately results in a smaller share for everyone.

See my tagline - that's the only way to accomplish it.

The complete lyrics:

The Trees (Rush)

There is unrest in the forest
Trouble with the trees
For the maples want more sunlight
And the oaks ignore their pleas

The trouble with the maples
(And they're quite convinced they're right)
They say the oaks are just too lofty
And they grab up all the light

But the oaks can't help their feelings
If they like the way they're made
And they wonder why the maples
Can't be happy in their shade

There is trouble in the forest
And the creatures all have fled
As the maples scream, "Oppression"
And the oaks just shake their heads

So the maples formed a union
And demanded equal rights
They say, "The oaks are just too greedy
We will make them give us light"

Now there's no more oak oppression
For they passed a noble law
And the trees are all kept equal
By hatchet, axe, and saw

The short answer is that the only way to attain it is theft. For example, take any NBA player and me. He can drain three-pointers like it’s easy, sprint up and down court all game, and grab rebounds from other players. I can’t. The only way to achieve equity in the matter is to make him unable to perform any better than I can. The only way to achieve equity in height is to amputate his legs. The only way to achieve equity in wealth and material possessions is to take from him. Giving it to me isn’t necessary, the people running the system get that. It’s great for them. Equity is a lie, a cheat, a scam, and blatant oppression. Next question.
