Picturesque North Carolina mountain town destroyed by Hurricane Helene as death toll nears 100: ‘There’s just nothing left’

Shocking images show how a picturesque North Carolina village was nearly wiped out by Hurricane Helene — as the death toll from the storm rose to almost 100, with desperate rescue missions continuing across the Southwest on Monday.

Chimney Rock initially appeared to have escaped Helene’s wrath — until floodwater overwhelmed a dam on Saturday, overruning the area and destroying almost everything in sight, the News & Observer noted.

“The village? There’s just nothing left,” rescue crew leader Chris Murray told the outlet.

“I’ve never seen concentrated damage like we’ve seen here.”

Family frequently spent fall-winter holidays in that area.
Never be the same. Tragic.
But the tragedy is wide spread. Much focus on the Carolinas right now.
Have family and friends in St Petersburg FL. No picnic there right now.

Has Biden activated FEMA? I’ve heard that he’s not planning to help the region. That’s probably not true, but you never know these days.

I drove through downtown here in our small town in SW Va and the governor was meeting with first responders. That’s something you never want to see. Apparently, there are videos of the damage here appearing on some news stations. Luckily, no one was hurt, they just lost a lot of 5th wheelers and campers. They had to evacuate a trailer park by rail.

Haven’t heard anything about FEMA.
Prayers for the dead and their loved ones.

Unfortunately what has happened at chimney Rock can be duplicated in dozens of cities in the western Carolinas. It’s an absolute disaster.

We’re in the fort Mill/ Indian land area. Power hasn’t been an issue fortunately.

If Trump shows up with help and supplies, maybe FEMA will show.

Don’t forget that the drive-by-media told their brain-dead masses that the evil Bush all but created hurricane Katrina and directed it towards minorities in Louisiana.

Google Earth reveals more or less what I expected: Chimney Rock, NC was at the bottom of a steep sided, narrow river valley with no floodplain. Any unusually large amount of water getting in there is always going to scrub the area clean. Over the past two centuries, similar hurricane-driven disasters have occurred in other parts of Appalachia. Hurricane flood damage isn’t limited coastal areas due to storm surge.

The town is a strip of houses next to Route 74, running in a narrow valley along Broad River, which is not real broad there, usually.

All the mountains draining down, everything upstream draining.

My ancestors’ area, as they moved from Rutherford up to Black Mountain.

Yep, geographically designed for a disaster when rain is excessive.

26 Sep was the day that this hurricane made landfall in FL. That’s the same day when a UN consortium DEMANDED an immediate cessation of hostilities by Israel against Hamas and Hezbollah. Coincidence? I’m not convinced.
