Newsom Signs Bill Banning Single-use Propane Cylinders for Camping

California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) signed a bill this week to ban one-pound, single-use propane cylinders, meaning that only more expensive reusable cylinders will be available in the state.

The San Francisco Chronicle reported:

Disposable propane canisters like the dark green ones used with camping stoves will soon be phased out in California, after Gov. Gavin Newsom signed legislation Sunday requiring all one-pound cylinders sold in the state to be reusable or refillable starting in 2028.

Between 4 million and 7 million of the single-use cylinders are sold in California each year, according to an estimate from the California Product Stewardship Council, a nonprofit local government coalition that sponsored the bill.

In 2022, Newsom vetoed a near-identical bill, SB 1256. In his veto letter, Newsom raised concerns about prohibiting sales of disposable cylinders “without a plan for collection and refill infrastructure.” The governor also urged the legislature to consider “market-based solutions” over an outright ban.

Isn’t it great the “problems” leftists focus on and “solve?”

I know camping canisters is a big one, but there may be one or two more important crises facing Californians these days.

What’s next? Banning S’mores and “selfies”?

If it saves a single life it’s worth it! /S

I remember that young woman last year that fell in the Grand Canyon when she was taking a selfie.

It’s mind boggling and disgusting that there are people in positions of power that stay awake at night and think of ways to screw random people.

This is the most important thing for that moron to focus his petty little mind on.

“People who use 1 lb. cylinders a LOT will come out ahead. Everybody else gets hosed.”

I don’t like big government but also don’t like throw-away steel cylinders.

Maybe it’s a matter of terminology, but what’s the matter with a propane cylinder that has a value when empty? You can throw it away, or you can swap it for a refilled one and save money.

Gavin and the Democrats are all about big business and passing costs onto the poor and middle class. Democrats in California don’t give a rats ass about the poor and middle class. It’s all about making the rich, richer and the poor, poorer.

They are easy to refill and very hard to over fill (unless you put the bottle in a freezer which will allow it to hold too much propane).

I refill mine all the time — I have an empty cylinder which I put on a scale and zero out the weight, then I weigh the partially full cylinder, add propane (I purchased a filler on Amazon that attaches to a 5 gallon propane cylinder) and add propane. It takes a few minutes and I check the tank while the process is underway...

Why do I do this?

Mrs. BBB333 & I have a RV that we use but also, on occasion we rent it out (via Outdoorsy) and I charge $5.00 per propane bottle to refill. We live north of YNP and Teeton National parks and these little cylinders cost $12.00 in the tourist areas. The renters save money and the bottles work just fine.

Screw California!

The Trump campaign has not done enough of reminding voters that Harris brings these California values to DC.

My condo in Austin on the 4th floor has three 20# tanks in the closet th st opens to that patio. They just sit there peacefully till I take them out to fire up the patio heater or the grill or Blackstone. I have quick offs on all the appliances it takes seconds to click click them on off. I also have a couple of one lb and some cute little 4 oz refillable tanks at that location for the propane culinary torch and for taking the portable grill or griddle to the greenbelts. I put the tanks in the freezer first then use the filler stand and hose combo outside on the patio deck never had an issue. I have filled disposable tanks with the same refill set up those don’t have overfill prevention valves so you need to weigh them empty and then once filled. The propose built refillable tanks have better valves disposable ones tend to leak after a few refills. So if you use disposable tanks at all you will pay back the price difference in short order using 20# tanks and a refil kit. I just saw two packs of one lb tanks at Wal-Mart for $11 that’s 5.59 each plus tax. Propane from TSC is $3.89 a gallon by volume which is 4.4lbs at 70F. That’s 88 cents a lb or 5 times cheaper. Those 1lb refill tanks have a 12 year life before they need to be tested and recertified. So much like disposable alkaline batteries vs rechargeable you absolutely will save money over the life span of the product vs using disposable the whole time.

For people who don’t have a refill kit there are stores like REI and Menards in California and Austin that swap refillable tanks empty for filled you buy the first tank full and then when you swap just like swapping 20# tanks at Wal-Mart you pay for the refill not the whole tank again. They also have 5# sized tanks which I have one of its super convenient to carry vs five one lb. That 5# tank lasts a three day weekend of two burner stove, plus table top grill plus 24” griddle. If you camp a lot you see those little green tanks thrown everywhere people are Aholes with litter in camp area’s. Having a tank with value eliminates that immediately as you want your tank for refill or a swap. The cool part of the 5# tank is its fiberglass super lightweight and....translucent you can see the fuel level and that’s genius.
