‘Massive Victory’ — Irish Government Drops Draconian Hate Speech Legislation After Backlash

The Irish government has abandoned plans to implement controversial new hate speech laws following widespread backlash from free speech advocates.

Justice Minister Helen McEntee confirmed on Saturday that Dublin will drop new hate speech provisions in the proposed Criminal Justice Bill, admitting that the “incitement to hatred” section of the legislation did “not have a consensus,” the Irish Times reports.

Critics of the speech restrictions have noted that the government failed to actually define what constitutes “hate” and therefore the law would have given broad powers to the state to crush dissent. The scope of the draconian powers would have even included jailing people for up to two years for merely “possessing material likely to incite violence or hatred against persons on account of their protected characteristics.”

Not yet. This is more just ‘damage control’ from the corrupt government.

Good to know I'm not looking at two years in the slammer for suggesting that Drag Queen Story Hour isn't a very good idea.

Does this mean the Irish govt wouldn't consider Notre Dame being called the FIGHTING IRISH with the iconic mascot of a guy dressed in green fixing to throw hands hate speech? I suppose the Irish govt won't ban the import of Lucky Charms cereal. Thank a then unknown James O'Keefe for "raising our consciousness" of how "demeaning" to the Irish community such a product is. Amazing that the college administrators actually fell for that gag. Stupid smart people 😀🤣🤣

Ask Ceucescu, and very soon, I suspect, Maduro.

This is no “massive victory”. McEntee is still pursuing hate crime legislation, which will have the exact same effect.

More like word humping. They took “hate speech” out, but they are still going full speed ahead with “hate crime” legislation.

The last soldier ever killed by firing squad was an Irishmen with the last name Duffy. He was serving in an Irish regiment in India at out outbreak of World War l. With the outbreak of World War I the English declared martial law in all of Ireland. Enraged, Duffy with a couple accomplices raided a British armory and captured rifles and went renegade.

Don’t piss off hotheaded Irishmen.
