The great experiment was states could be themselves and do things differently and people could decide by vote or with their feet if they liked that states policies and laws or not. The federal government should have no favorites and treat everyone the same. You have two taxmen, the fed and the state. You need to take this beef up with the state. As it presently is, with caps, the fed is treating everyone the same. (That’s not saying the tax code is fair by any means, if that were the case it would be a flat rate)

“Actually I think the current State and Local tax deduction ... SHOULD BE ELIMINATED”

Sounds like a good idea but proposing a tax raise doesn’t go over well when campaigning.

No way. Red states and the south have been overrun by blue refugees fleeing their failed states. Part of keeping blue people there is salt, let them have it. Its a small stipend to help slow the invasion.

You need to take this beef up with the state.

That exacty what I said. You hate Cali? Boycott Cali.

The cap screws the individuals, the citizens. Not the states.

We are in the middle of a war. You are a yapping dog giving aid to the enemy. You have latent TDS.

Your state is screwing you by spending beyond its means. You want special treatment from Uncle Sam as a result and that’s unjust to those of us who don’t get the deduction you get. You should count yourself lucky you get 10% where it’s capped. Your states welfare is not my states problem. And Uncle Sam shouldnt play favorites if you actually believe in federalism.

We have a fundamental disagreement on this matter.

-Your state is screwing you by spending beyond its means.

Let’s say I live in such a state. So what? Aren’t people allowed free will? I didn’t ask anyone to “save me.” That’s liberal talk - “These MAGA people need to be re-educated.”

-You want special treatment from Uncle Sam

Tax dedications are “special treatment”? If so, why aren’t you arguing for elimination of the mortgage interest deduction? Let’s also eliminate charitable deductions. While we are at it, make employees pay for health care after tax. All that’s special treatment.

-as a result and that’s unjust to those of us who don’t get the deduction you get.

You can get those deductions, too. Move to New Jersey. It’s a terrible state as far as government is concerned but the diners are good. It’s a free country.

-You should count yourself lucky you get 10% where it’s capped.

Or, said differently, let them eat cake.

-Your states welfare is not my states problem.

Huh? Nobody is arguing that Florida should bail out Connecticut.

-And Uncle Sam shouldnt play favorites if you actually believe in federalism.

You believe it is perfectly fine to use the tax code in the hopes of garnering a second-order effect on high tax states’ spending, by increasing the federal income tax bill on individuals. You want to rob Peter and pray that loss of disposable income will hurt the State in which Peter chooses to live. Until that prayer is answered, you’re fine repeatedly robbing Peter.

It’s best to end here. Have a great evening.

It harmed a lot of middle income families whose chief investment is their home. It simply wasn’t fair. And it was harmful to people....like my daughter and her family...

You are stuck in your selfish opinion. Yes, selfish because you are looking at your tax situation and not the bigger principle.

To your counter arguments, I agree the tax code is and has been for decades used to influence buyers habits. In the early days the mortgage deduction was and somewhat remains an incentive for families to buy homes, which is arguably good for them and for the economy. So if you are not a home owner, it’s true you don’t get that tax benefit. But….

The home mortgage deduction doesn’t favor one state over another. It’s that simple. Anyone who wants, regardless of the state the are in, can avail themselves of that deduction.

There are many things about the tax code I dislike. Just because I can’t fix all of them at once doesn’t mean I shouldn’t try to fix what I can.

Sure it does. The median home price varies wildly by state. Prescinding from that point, individuals can buy higher priced homes in Mississippi because of that interest deduction. Finally, it’s discriminatory against renters.

But that state tax deduction….THAT is evil. Let’s hurt the inhabitants of those states so we can feel warm and fuzzy. They’re all libs anyway, right?

Yes, I am not a collectivist. I put my family and The Holy Trinity ahead of everyone else. My actions aren’t forceful nor fraudulent. I harbor no shame about that.

To that point, I don’t go around advocating for tax increases on my fellow man because I’m unhappy about perceived negative externalities arising from Taxachusetts. This cap is all about anger, envy, and power - which are textbook leftist traits.

Be well.

I hope Congress vetoes that attempt.

Blue states should not have national advantages for their high taxes. Limiting SALT was a good thing.

Renters don’t get a mortgage deduction but rarely if ever pay property tax directly (yes it’s hidden in their rent). But I’ve argued enough.

I would be happy with a simple flat tax and get rid of the code and irs.

If I could add one more thought to my last reply, I don’t like anything that hides the tax burden from the tax payer.

In the renters case, the property tax is hidden. The renter pays it but never has to ‘see’ it. So when local tax initiatives come up for votes, renters are all for the new ‘services’ or community ‘improvements’ since they don’t see the hidden costs that a homeowner sees.

SALT similarly hides your state tax burden with its ‘deduction’ and reduces the pressure on states to cut spending on stupid stuff.

Income tax withholding also hides to some degree the tax burden. Do people really think they are getting a refund? If they had to pay the bill out of pocket each year they would be upset beyond words.

V/R

Short of a repeal of the 16th, we are in agreement.

Be well and thanks for the spirited debate.

It was downright dumb. I saw the hand of Kevin Brady, one of histories most worthless congressmen, at work. He is also one of the dumbest ever.
