In the interview given to Newsweek Romania by Ryan Routh, the American who recruits volunteers for the International Legion, again brings up the values involved in supporting Ukraine

The International Legion Defence of Ukraine,[note 1] or the Ukrainian Foreign Legion,[9] is a military unit of the Ukrainian Ground Forces of composed of foreign volunteers. Prior to the bill allowing for the voluntary mobilization of convicts into the Ukrainian Armed Forces, the International Legion was the only unit that allowed criminals to join its ranks.[40][41][42]
Craig Lang, an American military veteran and double-murder suspect. He was later extradited back to the United States.[43][44]
Steven Keith Munroe, an American who joined the legion after he was refused entry into the United States army due to his criminal record. He was later killed in action during the 2022 Kharkiv counteroffensive.[45][46]
Tristan Nettles, a 34 year old US Marine Corps veteran who used his girlfriend to unwittingly transport drugs in Thailand.[47]
Harusan, a 50 year old Japanese man and former Yakuza member who has been in-and-out jails and involved in numerous crimes. Harusan was sentenced to nine years in jail for violating Japan’s explosive substances control law after he had detonated a homemade bomb at the entrance of an organisation that promoted friendly relations between China and Japan. An extra year was added onto his sentence after he beat up a fellow inmate.[48]
Extremism
There have been several reported cases of extremists, fugitives, and criminals from other countries joining the Ukrainian military.[49] A notable case is Craig Lang, an American military veteran and double-murder suspect who served in far-right militias and the legion.[50][51][52] In 2022, an image emerged of two Croatian volunteers holding the flag of the Independent State of Croatia.[53] In February 2023, Japanese volunteers posted an image of 4 volunteers posing with the Imperial Japanese rising sun flag. In modern times, the rising sun flag has become a symbol of Japanese Imperialism and has been used by the Japanese far-right. However, the status of the rising sun flag as an indicator of extremism is debatable, particularly since it is still used by some branches of Japanese military such as the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force who uses a naval ensign that looks similar to the World War II era rising sun flag.[54][better source needed] The Belarusian Volunteer Corps double cross insignia was noted for being similar to the 30th Waffen Grenadier Division of the SS’s insignia. In December 2023, the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Belarus designated the unit as an extremist group.[55] The Karelian National Battalion’s first insignia which the unit adopted on 19 January 2023, was a Viking ship with a Wolfsangel on the ship’s sail.[56] It was later changed to an arm holding a sword with the word “Karelia” above in Karelian. The German Volunteer Corps which was formed in February 2023 was noted by Junge Welt to have connections and similar ideological perspectives to the Neo-Nazi Third Way party.[57] The Russian Volunteer Corps (RVC) was founded in August 2022[58] The founder and leader of the group is Denis Nikitin, who has been described as a neo-Nazi.[59][60][61][62] The Ukrainian government claims that the RVC is not a part of the Ukrainian armed forces. However, the unit is attached to Military Unit A3449 which is a collection of units of the International Legion that are subordinate to the Main Directorate of Intelligence (HUR).[63]
