Tuesday night’s high-stakes debate between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris will be one of the defining events of this year — maybe this decade.
Two months before Election Day, the race is about as close as can be, and the candidates will have no greater opportunity to make their contrasts stark than after they shake hands in Philadelphia.
Longtime Republican strategist Karl Rove says Trump has the more difficult task because he’s the one running on substantive issues — as opposed to Harris’ vacuous “joy”-filled campaign.
Trump can win the debate, before Harris makes her opening argument.
That’s why it’s particularly important the former president stays on message.
What he says and how he says it will matter throughout the evening. But his two-minute closing statement, which will follow Harris’ and put a period on the event, is especially important: It’s his best chance to clearly articulate a vision for the country and prosecute the case against Harris’.
If he wants to win the night and the election, he’ll have to do just that and avoid the rambling rants and personal attacks that have held back his campaign.
Here’s what that might look like:
Do you remember when going to the grocery store and stopping at the gas station didn’t fill you with dread?
Do you remember when the news out of the Middle East was about our enemies being brought to heel and peace deals being forged?
Do you remember when our southern border wasn’t an international embarrassment?
It’s no coincidence the last time you remember any of this, I was your president.

JOY! Until you get to the grocery store checkout.
Yeah well Trump can’t help himself. I personally find it humourous but I can definitely see why many revile him.
Trump could just say, "Are you drunk?"
There are none among those who “revile” Trump who understand their own motive for feeling that way.
The closing statement is very good and highlights the issues.
Kari Lake had a great line on inflation a month or two ago:
The Biden-Harris economy has everybody driving a luxury vehicle - it’s called a grocery cart.
Oh no? You speak for many.
None of them understand why they hate Trump.
(Except the criminals who fear justice, of course.)
Since there will be no opening statements, what is plan B?
And the fact that so many lefties are screaming about Donald Trump tells me they’ve all done some nefarious deeds.
Fixed it
This looks like an easy victory for armchair quarterbacks. But there shall be many a slip possible.
Watch Trump’s face as “Que mala” is speaking. An impassive expression breaking out into a grin or even a wide smile as she delivers one of her “word salad” clichés will be treated as “oppressive” or “sexist” by the press. A puzzled look or even a frown will be called “misogynistic” or “white supremacy” as an aside to the Democrat Socialists True Believers, who in no way could be persuaded anyway, and they will take up the chant on social media, with an hysteria matched only by religious frenzy and mania. Every act, every gesture, will be studied for its potential to denigrate Trump’s performance, and every flub or example of circular thinking by “Que mala” will be but an expression of great wisdom and perspicuity, even though not one person in the listening audience could decipher its meaning.
VP Harris good, Orange Man bad.
It’s because when you’re mind-controlled, you don’t know why you do what you do.
A reasonable conclusion.
"Are you better off than you were 4 years ago?"
I don’t know whether it fits better as his opener, or as the closer, but I think Trump needs to say something like... “Kamala has (or will) promised a lot tonight... a secure border, a strong economy, peace in the Middle East... but you have to ask one question... Kamala and Biden have had four years already and HAVE DELIVERED NONE OF IT. By every objective measure things are worse than they were four years ago. Why on earth would you vote for four more years of failed Kamala Harris/Joe Biden policies?
That is a thoroughly stupid assertion…until you consider how many voters are like this kid’s mom…
