Elon Musk changes his tune on H1-B visas as he tries to cool raging MAGA civil war over skilled immigration

Elon Musk admitted that the H1-B visas are “broken” and floated a potential fix as he sought to cool a raging civil war within the MAGA base over the immigration program for highly skilled foreign workers.
Just a day after vowing to “go to war on this issue” and telling detractors to “F— yourself,” Musk, the world’s richest man, acknowledged some of the criticisms of the program getting abused and argued that the US should make it more costly to hire foreigners.
“Easily fixed by raising the minimum salary significantly and adding a yearly cost for maintaining the H1B, making it materially more expensive to hire from overseas than domestically,” Musk wrote on X late Saturday in response to a thread claiming H1-B visas were being used to hire low-wage programmers and developers.
“I’ve been very clear that the program is broken and needs major reform,” he added. “I’m confident that the changes made in the @realDonaldTrump administration will make America much stronger.”

I wonder if we can replace the program with something like Australia has, they only let in people that they have a legitimate need for. I’m not sure how they keep track of that, if companies put in a wish list to the government or something....

Lol I think they’ll forgive Elon a lot quicker than they will Vivek. At least Elon has acknowledge the abuse of the system being used for these Indian-first oligarchs to bring over as many of their countrymen, family and friends as possible. I wonder what the diversity range is over at Big Techs like Google. I wonder how many of the Big Tech employees have actually served in the military.
There is no mechanism in place to make sure these Money First Americans try and hire real Americans first. I think there are many imports in America for the sake of making money, and nothing else.

I just heard of the news about the passing of President Jimmy Carter. Those of us who have been fortunate to have served as President understand this is a very exclusive club, and only we can relate to the enormous responsibility of leading the Greatest Nation in History.
The challenges Jimmy faced as President came at a pivotal time for our country and he did everything in his power to improve the lives of all Americans. For that, we all owe him a debt of gratitude.
Melania and I are thinking warmly of the Carter Family and their loved ones during this difficult time. We urge everyone to keep them in their hearts and prayers.

The extension of the Debt Ceiling by a previous Speaker of the House, a good man and a friend of mine, from this past September of the Biden Administration, to June of the Trump Administration, will go down as one of the dumbest political decisions made in years. There was no reason to do it - NOTHING WAS GAINED, and we got nothing for it - A major reason why that Speakership was lost. It was Biden’s problem, not ours. Now it becomes ours. I call it “1929” because the Democrats don’t care what our Country may be forced into. In fact, they would prefer “Depression” as long as it hurt the Republican Party. The Democrats must be forced to take a vote on this treacherous issue NOW, during the Biden Administration, and not in June. They should be blamed for this potential disaster, not the Republicans!

I’m thinking some kind of public list.
Employers should have to post a description of the job they want an H1b for into a central published file, including remuneration, benefits, etc. That posting should be public for a certain length of time before they are allowed to apply for the H1b, with Americans having access to the postings and are able to apply.
Nothing is perfect, but the more hoops these oligarchs have to jump through, and the more scrutiny and follow-up, the greater the chances of some Americans being hired first.
Sounds good to me. And that way everyone knows what position the company ended up going outside the country for. They can get some flack if they really didn’t need to. Hopefully get more than that
