UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has removed a portrait of former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher from No. 10 Downing Street.
This decision was first revealed by Starmer’s biographer, Tom Baldwin, during an event at Glasgow’s Aye Write book festival.
The portrait, which had been prominently displayed in Thatcher’s former office – informally known as the Thatcher Room – was commissioned by Gordon Brown in 2009. Painted by Richard Stone, the artwork was unique as it was the first portrait of a former prime minister to be specifically commissioned for No. 10. It was financed by an anonymous donor and reportedly cost £100,000 (€118,840). Thatcher herself selected the jewellery and buttons she wore in the painting.
Baldwin recounted a conversation with Starmer in which the prime minister acknowledged the discomfort the portrait brought him. Baldwin recalled saying, “It’s a bit unsettling with her staring down as you like that, isn’t it?” to which Starmer agreed and indicated he would have the portrait removed.
The decision has drawn criticism, particularly from members of the Conservative Party. Greg Smith, MP for Mid Buckinghamshire, described the removal as “utter pettiness” and accused Starmer of lacking respect for historical figures. Murdo Fraser, a former candidate for Scottish Tory leadership, echoed these sentiments, suggesting that Starmer might feel overshadowed by Thatcher’s legacy.
Despite the criticism, Starmer has previously expressed respect for Thatcher’s influence on the UK. In an article for the Sunday Telegraph last December, he acknowledged her role in bringing about “meaningful change” and praised her for unleashing Britain’s “natural entrepreneurialism” during her tenure.
The removal of the portrait highlights the ongoing complexities of Thatcher’s legacy in British politics. While she remains a dividing figure, with strong opinions both in favour and against her policies, her impact on the nation’s history is undeniable. Starmer’s decision, whether viewed as symbolic or practical, is likely to continue to provoke debate among political commentators and the public alike.
Seems unacceptable.
Sounds like Stammer is ANTI-WOMEN, or at least anti-STRONG WOMEN.
This guy is a total flaming disaster. Are you happy you voted Labor now Brits?!
Of course he does.
What an insufferable and petty tyrant!
Replaced it with beautiful painting of Joseph Stalin.
The &!!#*&!!###**#”!!&!! has gone too far this time!!
They can only destroy whatever they touch.

Labor sucks. But I can not discern any meaningful way in which they are any worse than the so called conservative Tories. They would have dealt with the protests very close to the same;
Condemn racism, make arrests of normal Brits and whites, dramatically defend migrants and moslems, blame Tommy Robinson, etc.
Meet the new boss....

🤔
But in a way, I feel bad for Prime Minister Starmer. He has a difficult choice to make. Does he replace Thatcher‘s picture for one of Lenin, Stalin, or Mao?
Perhaps he could hang a picture depicting all three.
Look the Torys messed things up with their not controlling immigration legal and illegal.
The UK is a very small country, it can not absorb the kind of numbers they were importing.
Starmer is going to be worse but it might shake out ok in the end because they are willing to abandon the Torys and start with some fresh blood.
The problem is, it might be too late.
Oh, BTW, the US can not absorb the kind of numbers we are importing either, both illegal and legal. This will get some people's panties in a twist and I don't care. We have to drop the number of immigrants down to a few thousand a year if we want to get some kind of cultural unity back.
And we need cultural unity. The USA has a culture that is unique in the world. It should not be allowed to just disappear.
Yeah, the UK has achieved such great things since her time.
Spit.
Can they get rid of him any way?
The U.K. was a giant country that stretched all over the world.
If the leaders of the two conservative parties would put their egos aside and unite they might actually get somewhere.
With each passing day, Starmer is showing himself to be the commie filth we thought he would probably be. Things look really bad for Britain but may God save them.
