Ukraine says US-made F-16 fighter jet crashed, killing a top pilot

A top Ukrainian pilot was killed when a US-made F-16 fighter jet crashed on Monday, a Ukrainian Defence Forces source told CNN.

The Ukrainian Defence Forces do not believe pilot error was behind the incident, the source added.

The pilot, Oleksiy Mes known as “Moonfish,” was killed in the crash while “repelling the biggest ever aerial attack” by Russia against Ukraine, said the source, adding that the pilot was buried on Thursday.

It should only take a few hundred hours for an experienced pilot to master a new fighter jet - if it has been designed correctly. That people say it takes thousands of hours to learn the F-16 is ample evidence that it has a craptastic design.

Based on this and your other posts, I would say your aviation “knowledge” is a wee bit lacking.

It might be the cover story for some F-16’s reportedly destroyed parked on an airstrip.

It might be pilot inexperience - the Ukrainians recieved 1/3 the training normally given F-16 pilots. The pilots in training were said to be 22-24 years of age. That’s either an inexperienced pilot and/or pilots completely new to flight.

I have flown airplanes before, I nearly earned my pilots license but gave it up because I could never understand the tower over the radio due to hearing. I will acknowledge learning to fly takes longer than learning to drive but learning a new aircraft should not be starting over from zero.

Face it, any war machine that takes thousands of hours to learn to use, even when you have long experience with a similar machines, means that the controls, software, and weapons systems have crappy interfaces that are overly complex, cryptic and poorly designed. Sadly, there are always idiotic defenders of the status quo.
