28-year-old surfer Liam Mahoney was arrested on the beach in Belmar, New Jersey on Tuesday, August 20th and was charged with disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, and obstruction of justice. Videos of the arrest went viral and there was massive public outcry about “beach badge” requirements for surfers at Belmar’s beaches. Beach badges are required for admission to Belmar’s beaches. They cost $12 per day and seasonal badges are available for $80.
It was first reported that Mahoney was arrested for not having his “beach badge” but Belmar Police have made a statement to the contrary:
“To be clear, Mr. Mahoney was not arrested for not having a beach badge. He was arrested because he obstructed the officer’s investigation by refusing to give his identification or pedigree information. Mr. Mahoney was also advised he was not free to leave and continued to walk away during this encounter.”
The Belmar Police Department released body worn camera footage of the arrest and full press release detailing what lead up to Mahoney being tackled to the ground, handcuffed and escorted off the beach.

Pedigree information? I wouldn't tell them either.
They shoot dogs don't they?
Beach badge? Beach badge?! I don’t need no stinkin’ beach badge!
But how do you get to the ocean? You have to walk on the beach & New Jersey wants to charge you for it. Just incredible what goes on these days.
I saw enough to see the surfer dude was a dick. Jersey cops are usually very professional ans they dont take any crap.

Well, I would. My cousin is 18th in line for the defunct crown of Hungary. That kinda makes me royalty. So I’ll brag about it every chance I get.

What no homeless badges? 🤔 oh yea, can’t shake down the homeless who are broke!
Ruff cop, ruff ruff.
The quest for peak bureaucratic absurdity steamrolls on.......
Name, address, DOB. Not subject to Miranda.
I was on the Jersey shore last weekend. No swimming as the ocean was too rough...saw a wet surfer walking by, I asked “ why did they let you in?” In a smart aleck condescending tone he said, “Cause I can swim”... yeah dick for sure
Wilderness Conservative my arse. You are all in for fees for access to public beaches which belong to everyone. It is disgusting to attack a man for refusing to pay the fee gestapo. When they start charging us for air you will be the first to pay.
After dealing with the beach badge Karens and cops at Stone Harbor and Avalon, NJ as a kid, it’s very hard to side with the cops for anything on this one. This surfer was probably targeted first for not having a beach badge and the cops escalated it to get him off the beach for the complaining Karens.
> Pedigree information?
Well . . . it’s kind of embarassing, but my great great great grandfather was run out of Europe in 1851. Now, he wasn’t exactly royalty, but it seems he was engaged by Prince Regent Luitpold of Bavaria to tutor his 15-year-old daughter, Princess Therese (Therese Charlotte Marianne Auguste) in zoology. It was in the course of those studies that my grandfather perportedly created an embarrasing scandal with the princess when the two of them . . .
He isn’t a police officer, he’s a tax collector.
Nice to see taxpayers in NJ are getting the protection they deserve from those troublesome surfboarders. /s
Wonder what would happen to an illegal alien strolling in front of the ocean....would they be protected by “Sanctuary Beach Status”?
the badge fees pay to clean up the mess that the pig people leave behind ...
They would have beaten him bloody in the 60s.
