Enrollment for Black and Latino students dropped at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the first class formed after the Supreme Court found race-conscience admissions in colleges unconstitutional.
The university’s admissions department on Wednesday released its first-year class profile, showing a sharp drop in its Black student population. About 5% of MIT’s incoming class of 2028 is Black, a significant drop from its 13% average in recent years. Latino students make up 11% of the class of 2028, compared to a 15% average in recent years. Overall, 1,102 students make up the incoming class.
Stu Schmill, MIT’s dean of admissions, attributed the drop to the high court’s 2023 decision to end consideration of race in the admissions process.
“We expected that this would result in fewer students from historically underrepresented racial and ethnic groups enrolling at MIT,” Schmill said of the ruling. “That’s what has happened.”
The white and Asian American student populations have increased, while all other groups have declined — some even down to zero, the profile shows.
In recent years, Black, Latino, Native American and Pacific Islander students have accounted for 25% of MIT’s enrolling undergraduate classes, the university said. That number has declined to about 16% for the incoming class of 2028. The profile marks the first time a selective university has released its freshman class statistics since the ruling.
The high court’s ruling struck down affirmative action programs at the University of North Carolina and Harvard, with far-reaching consequences for other public universities. The court ruled that the schools’ affirmative action programs violated the Equal Protection Clause of the Constitution and are therefore unlawful.
Although the ruling bars schools from using race as a factor in admissions, prospective students can still share their racial or ethnic backgrounds through application materials, like essays and personal statements,

This is a reflection of the deplorable state of education in America’s schools, not a commentary on racism, which I suspect is going to be the standard go-to response from the race hustler talking head class on tv.
It means they must have been stupid, it would appear, once merit is required.
I don’t recall the “media” stories about white enrollment dropping when these racist polices of the left were in place...
It shows the colleges are in it for the money-—government gives minorities LOTS of money, the schools act as if it’s about the “minority”....Drop the money and “voila” schools can no longer pretend they’re woke.
What was the GRADUATION rate before the ruling?
The FACTS are that every one of these big ivy league and prestigious schools have endowments big enough to choke a herd of horses. Enough money to pay tuition for all of the blacks who could meet the entry requirements - in perpetuity.
I recall Walter Williams (subbing for Rush) discussing how affirmative action helps no one, especially those the policies are designed to assist. His arguments boiled down the simple concept that applies universally to all people — think Raygun’s Olympic breakdancing
It is bad that NBC selects and ignore numbers and adjust periods to tell what they want. From another source (ZH) the last year to this year numbers are Black 15/5, Hispanic 16/11, Asian 40/47 and Whites 38/37. They total more than 100 due to mixed race.
NBC made the prior an average over the past few years. Also, they didn’t give the change in Asian numbers. I bet if you split out White into Jewish and White, the White decline would be greater.
What does one expect from the inner city part of the culture where smart kids who want to learn are bullied for “acting white”?
Now, no one can say these students weren’t the best of the best. Right?
Here’s what everyone should really complain about: These colleges receive a fortune from the U.S. taxpayers. And they still charge a fortune in tuition, and they accept students from other countries.

To say Ibram Kendi is mediocre is to insult the category. He can only aspire to that adjective. Yet he was given $50m to study racism. Not $50K or even $500K. $50m. On his best day, mediocre is a stretch target, a pipe dream, even. So, true to form, he face-planted for a project where his job was to organize a choir of malcontents to best present and amplify their feelings about how racism affected their lives.

YAH FREAKING HOO!!!!
MERIT ONLY!!!
Didn’t a speaker at the DNC just blast Vance for attending Yale and being out of touch with middle America for going to a good school.
So if a good school is bad for a white dude, why is it a good thing for
a DEI admission for a minority to a good school.
