Perhaps this will both
1. save the colleges and
2. put pressure on some of the miserably- failing high schools to start teaching a their students a whole lot better

It will take a lot longer for the damage to black students and graduates to go away then it will take for the damage to the reputation of the school.

Thomas Sowell reflects on the academic excellence of the all-black schools he attended as a child. Those schools provided discipline and academic rigor, enabling the black students to match and even excel the achievements of the children in white schools.

As it should be. Asians and Whites should not be penalized to correct supposed historic wrongs.

The remaining blacks will know that they earned it by merit, not DEI. They’ll be the model for young blacks, rather than LeBron James bouncing a ball over a court.

Yes, but you know what? Any black graduate from MIT in the future will get top dollars offers. Hiring companies will know they’re getting diversity for their own staff AND a high quality student.
To: rightwingintelligentsia
MIT should focus on financial aid to underrepresented students who meet or exceed their academic standards and forget about lowering standards to make admission easier.

About 5% of MIT’s incoming class of 2028 is Black, a significant drop from its 13% average in recent years. Now that 5% will know they actually earned their place at MIT.

Was the author of this article a DEI hire?
To: rightwingintelligentsia
I read the entire article and couldn’t find anything about the graduation rate of underserved minorities at MIT.
Funny that.

Years ago, I attended a private women’s college and I paid every single penny of tuition, fees and books myself. During a class where we were going over what was going to be on the final exam, an AA woman was sleeping at her desk directly in front of me. She woke up and was stretching as we were leaving when class ended and I asked her if she was ready for the exam. She was still stretching and said, ‘no’ and I asked her if she was worried she might fail the exam and, hence, the class. ‘Nope’ she said and told me that “I” would just pay for her to take the class again. Minorities didn’t have to pay to attend. I was working a full time job and going without so much so I could afford to attend.

The average SAT score at MIT is 1540. In 2023, 25% of Asian kids scored over 1400. 6% of white kids, 2% of Hispanic kids and 1% of black kids. That 1% of black kids is only 2,250. Every elite college wants them, and even took black kids with scores in the 1200’s. And test optional is/was a boon for DEI admissions.
Almost 50,000 Asians and 45,000 white kids scored that high, and 1400 is at the very low end of Ivy acceptances for kids of those races. It’s not a surprise that MIT had a drop in black enrollment after dropping test optional.
