Enrollment for Black and Latino students dropped at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the first class formed after the Supreme Court found race-conscience admissions in colleges unconstitutional.
The university’s admissions department on Wednesday released its first-year class profile, showing a sharp drop in its Black student population. About 5% of MIT’s incoming class of 2028 is Black, a significant drop from its 13% average in recent years. Latino students make up 11% of the class of 2028, compared to a 15% average in recent years. Overall, 1,102 students make up the incoming class.
Stu Schmill, MIT’s dean of admissions, attributed the drop to the high court’s 2023 decision to end consideration of race in the admissions process.
“We expected that this would result in fewer students from historically underrepresented racial and ethnic groups enrolling at MIT,” Schmill said of the ruling. “That’s what has happened.”
The white and Asian American student populations have increased, while all other groups have declined — some even down to zero, the profile shows.
In recent years, Black, Latino, Native American and Pacific Islander students have accounted for 25% of MIT’s enrolling undergraduate classes, the university said. That number has declined to about 16% for the incoming class of 2028. The profile marks the first time a selective university has released its freshman class statistics since the ruling.

How well did MIT do in recruiting Anti-Semites?
Like that is a desirable goal....
Giving a free ride to kids that should be there but can not afford it would be HUGE positive all around.
It enables poor smart kids to get in and go through the program.
It also ensures that ANY student at MIT, REALLY is the best of the best.
None of the “Yes. He’s a complete idiot.. But his father went there so, he got in..”
heads up
Was the author of this article a DEI hire?
I read the entire article and couldn’t find anything about the graduation rate of underserved minorities at MIT.
Funny that.
BTTT
It is NOT just the educational system failing Black students.
The US government has failed Black families ever since it incentivized people to not stay married. Having children out of wedlock. This destruction of the family by the government has made Black people remain poor and dependent on welfare.
As a direct comparison, Asian families that moved here from Korea, Japan, China, India, Vietnam, etc have all done much better economically. Even though many of those families came to the USA less than fifty years ago with virtually nothing.
Even Hispanic people tend to do better than Blacks because Hispanics are majority Catholic families. Therefore, they tend to stay married and raise their children in TWO parent households.
The Democratic Party is the ruling party in the U.S. They need the votes from their Black voters so the way to do that is to keep them poor and dependent on welfare.
Absolutely! It's not skin color; it's culture.
On a completely different subject but still similar: we don't have a gun problem; we have a behavior problem.
I'd add there is also a work ethic element to all of this. Asians and Hispanics tend to want to work hard, along with providing for a family, along with trying to learn, study etc.
IF THERE IS ONLY ONE UNIVERSITY WHERE MERIT SHOULD MATTER——
THIS IS THE ONE.
TURN that around:
How many WORTHY STUDENTS did NOT get a seat because it was occupied by a person who did not merit being there?
When my daughter was in elementary school, she and a black kid named Michael were the two best students but when they got to junior high Michael's grades fell off dramatically. My daughter asked him about it, and he said that in his neighborhood making good grades was being "too white", and he preferred to fit into his neighborhood to making good grades.
2. etc:
BREAKING the TEACHERS UNION & only hiring those WITH TRUE MERIT & TALENT is the ONLY way the kids will learn.
“Special Needs” kids need to have their own classes & NOT be interrupting the regular kids.
DISCIPLINE needs to restored thruout the entire system.
Years ago, I attended a private women’s college and I paid every single penny of tuition, fees and books myself. During a class where we were going over what was going to be on the final exam, an AA woman was sleeping at her desk directly in front of me. She woke up and was stretching as we were leaving when class ended and I asked her if she was ready for the exam. She was still stretching and said, ‘no’ and I asked her if she was worried she might fail the exam and, hence, the class. ‘Nope’ she said and told me that “I” would just pay for her to take the class again. Minorities didn’t have to pay to attend. I was working a full time job and going without so much so I could afford to attend.
THAT REQUIRES REAL TESTING-—NO FUDGING NO FREE SCORES
IN THE REAL WORLD, THERE ARE FEW DAILY “DO-OVERS”
Yes, it is a cultural problem for Blacks.
75% of Black children are born into ONE parent households.
This is the highest of any racial group.
The opposite being Asians who not only stayed married raising their children. The grandparents may be living with their adult children. Watching their grandchildren while their kids go to work. I know many Asian families that live like this.
In addition, we all know of Asian and other legal immigrant families that will come here and buy a business. Then the entire family works at the business six to seven days a week to run that business. I currently know a Jordanian family running the gas station in my town doing this. Seven days a week. Twelve hours/day.
I also know a Mexican family that started a restaurant in my town. At first all the kids worked there. Now, one of the daughters opened a second Mexican restaurant in another town.
Good catch!
The average SAT score at MIT is 1540. In 2023, 25% of Asian kids scored over 1400. 6% of white kids, 2% of Hispanic kids and 1% of black kids. That 1% of black kids is only 2,250. Every elite college wants them, and even took black kids with scores in the 1200’s. And test optional is/was a boon for DEI admissions.
Almost 50,000 Asians and 45,000 white kids scored that high, and 1400 is at the very low end of Ivy acceptances for kids of those races. It’s not a surprise that MIT had a drop in black enrollment after dropping test optional.
