Two ways -
Enlisted service prior to being commissioned, and medically retired.
My son is a medically retired Army Staff Sergeant from Iraq service with 10 years in.
Everyone on the list is (Ret) in grades that should not be retired. Yes I understand you can be enlisted and move to officer, but that is not normal. IMHO there are too many out of norm retired grades on the list.
