The last remaining Denny’s in San Francisco closed its doors this month because customers would frequently leave without paying their bill in the crime-plagued city, according to the restaurant’s owner.
Chris Haque shuttered the 24-hour diner at 816 Mission St. near the Union Square section on Aug. 1 after 25 years.
“We’re the only store left, and we operated until the last day that we could,” Haque told SFGATE. “The cost of doing business is tremendous. There’s vandalism, and people come and eat and walk away, and there’s no one to stop them.”
Haque also lamented the fact that a key source of revenue — business conventions — had dried up in recent years due to the tech industry shifting to hybrid work during the pandemic.

Now I’m craving a huge breakfast from Denny’s.
Jack was pretty smart too - having his hat fly off as he’s running so you can see he hasn’t taken the Mark of the Beast on his forehead. And you can see his right hand too - no Mark of the Beast.
My kids gotta eat, racists......
Fun fact:
“George Christopher (born George Christopheles; December 8, 1907 – September 14, 2000) was a Greek-American politician who served as the 34th mayor of San Francisco from 1956 to 1964. As of 2024, he is the most recent Republican to be elected mayor of San Francisco.”
San Francisco can run the diner.
It’s rare when I can go but I always enjoyed Denny’s and IHOP and Perkins
I have never been in a Waffle House though
I took a girlfriend to a late-night dinner at Perkins in 1982 - there were about 10 of us there that night
Drove past the spot just last Friday - it’s nothing but an empty parking lot now - no building whatsoever - been that way bor at least 30 years now
Just make them pay before they get the food...just like McDonald’s.
‘and a king took Away the head of That Jesus Freak.’
Powerful song 🧡
Our local Denny’s is consistently good, fresh, clean, and affordable. We visit about twice a month (sometimes my husband and I will go out, sometimes we will take the two “kids” still at home, sometimes it’s one of us with one of our kids).
The manager knows us. The wait staff recognize us. We tip well, are polite, and pre-stack/clean our table when we are done. I worked in the restaurant industry in college and respect the folks in it now.
I would have no problem with a reservation system.
Then again, I’m not a useless slug who steals from hardworking people.
I don’t think I’ve ever heard that one
Please order via your mobile phone or ask the hostess to assist you.
In Spain, I normally ordered McDonald’s food via a kiosk.
San Fransicko brought this on themselves.
Either way, a cop trike (motorcycle) with a PORTABLE guillotine......
Oh, THAT’S what preview is for.......
That’s the observable trajectory indeed.
“business conventions — had dried up in recent years due to” street crime, muggings, car break-ins, epidemic open-air drug use, filthy sideways occupied by filthy squatters, etc., etc.
“Maybe another vendor will try a new Denny’s in San Francisco soon, but this time, by appointment only!”
man-trap entrances solve most retail theft problems and work pretty much for all types of retail businesses ... these have been used through-out hong-kong and Kowloon for many decades ...
How fitting.
Mission St. south of Union Square is right by Moscone Center, the main convention venue.
Not ALL conventions are gone. This May I arrived just in time for the RSA (IT security) conference. I wasn’t planning on going, but a friend gave us tickets. Didn’t stay long, but it seemed well attended.
The restaurants in the area were full, to the point that we couldn’t get a reservation all week for the Brazilian place, Fogo de Chão.
Non doubt there aren’t enough conventions. It doesn’t help when the nearby venues close, like the shopping district, which was a major draw.
Redondo Beach is no longer safe?
