A longtime Maryland Democrat and one of the longest-serving members in Congress survived a stroke over the weekend his team announced Tuesday.

Rep. Steny Hoyer, 85, has represented Maryland in Congress since first being elected in 1981.

'On Sunday night, August 11, Rep. Steny Hoyer experienced a mild ischemic stroke and sought medical treatment,' Hoyer spokesperson Margaret Mulkerrin wrote in a statement.

'Mr. Hoyer has responded well to treatment and has no lingering symptoms. He expects to resume his normal schedule next week.'

'Mr. Hoyer’s wife and family extend their deepest thanks to his medical team,' the statement concluded.

I would not wish a stroke on anyone, but this dude should have retired a long time ago.

43 years at the public trough cost taxpayers millions to support him. Not much of a return.

He may hold on to the office.

John Dingell,Jr. in his last years had been wheeled into the House chamber for important votes and a young aide helped him hold his head up to see a vote was in process. The aide would ask him his choice yay or nay and indicate the response. Dingell’s head could be seen to slump forward. Then Dingell would be wheeled out to a limo.

U.S. Rep. John Dingell,Jr. died at age 92. He was a page in the House from 1938-1943. He had attended Capitol Page School.

When his father US Rep. Dingell Sr. died in office (in the seat from 1933-1955) he took over the seat by special election. Before retiring he had served in Congress from 1955 through 2014. Eisenhower was his first President while in Congress.

He was the longest serving Congressperson in U.S. history.

Current US Rep. Debbie Dingell was the widow and immediate successor in his district from 2015 to today.

That Michigan district has been run by a Dingell and a Democrat from 1933-2024 and still going strong.

He has been in the House over half of his life. The perfect poster child (or maybe poster geezer) for term limits.

Yeah I retired at 62. There is more to life than work and politics.

Yes, it is. I think the goal of the dinosaur congress critters is to die while in office.

No tears over Hoyer ... I try not to wish harm; however, if it’s ever Pelosi, I might not be able to stop a smile.

Eighty-five and in Congress for 43 years. The most malignant development of the 20th century was the life-long professional politician.

Maryland… extremely difficult to oust a Dem. Somehow we got Ehrlich (good!) and Hogan (so so) as governors.

“Be very afraid of what will follow Steny”

Hoyer will DEFINITELY be the last White person, and possibly the last male, to represent that shithole of a district in Congress for eons to come.

Like Pelosi and many other octagenarians and nonavarians, Hoyer will leave when he has to be carried out. Is it an addiction to the power and the perqs?
