A longtime Maryland Democrat and one of the longest-serving members in Congress survived a stroke over the weekend his team announced Tuesday.

Rep. Steny Hoyer, 85, has represented Maryland in Congress since first being elected in 1981.

'On Sunday night, August 11, Rep. Steny Hoyer experienced a mild ischemic stroke and sought medical treatment,' Hoyer spokesperson Margaret Mulkerrin wrote in a statement.

'Mr. Hoyer has responded well to treatment and has no lingering symptoms. He expects to resume his normal schedule next week.'

'Mr. Hoyer’s wife and family extend their deepest thanks to his medical team,' the statement concluded.

Thoughts of retirement? Not on the radar apparently.

Geez, he should have retired years ago. When I reached 62 I knew it was time. Getting Long Covid was the final straw for me.

With all due respect, let's please not go there. "They" love to rejoice when someone on the other side suffers injury or death. We're better than that.

My father had a stroke, almost ten years ago. He lingered for 16 days but it was clear he would not recover, and he had long made his wishes known. In the end it fell to me to sign the do not resuscitate order.

A stroke is something I wouldn't wish on anyone.

When Kamala’s campaign implodes, they can run Hoyer.

The only time they go away is in a pine box, feet first.

Sheer arrogance that the world can’t survive without them.

Turn the phoookin page already.

Disgusted with these people.

I didn’t mean for him to die. I just meant it’s time for him to step aside.

Rep. Steny Hoyer, 85, has represented Maryland in Congress since first being elected in 1981.

That's 43 years, folks!

Hoyer hasn't represented much of anything useful in at least three decades, other than being Nancy Pelosi's purse carrier!

Agreed.

A good friend suffered a stroke sitting across from me at lunch one day, because he was in such denial we didn’t get him to the hospital in time and he was gone.

Whether the congressman should still hold office is another question...

Thank you. I can agree with you on that.

Serving in Congress should not be a lifetime career.
