Germany's EV Sales Sink 37% As Subsidies End

The biggest European car market, Germany, saw the sales of electric vehicles plummet by 36.8% in July from a year earlier, as EV sales are softening worldwide and as Berlin ended subsidies at the end of 2023.

New car registrations of battery vehicle vehicles (BEVs) in Germany slumped to 30,762 vehicles in July from the same month of 2023, the latest data rom the German Federal Motor Transport Authority showed on Monday. July marked the largest annual drop in EV sales since the government ended subsidies for EV acquisitions in December 2023.

While BEV sales plunged, the overall car market held relatively flat. New car registrations of gasoline-powered passenger vehicles rose by 0.1% year-over-year in July, and diesel car sales increased by 1.4%.

Tesla’s new registrations slumped by 36.7% in July compared to the same month of 2023, and was among the worst-performing foreign brands in Germany last month.

Renault, Hyundai, and Fiat, among others, also saw their sales on the German market fall in July compared to a year earlier.

EV demand has visibly softened over the past year, leaving legacy automakers in the U.S., Germany, and France struggling with an overcapacity of their EV models as they realize that the transition to fully electrified transportation will be taking longer than they thought.

Earlier this year, BEV sales in the United States fell for the first time since the onset of Covid in 2020.

With lower EV sales than expected, major carmakers in the U.S. and Europe are scaling back production of electric vehicles amid overcapacity and are rethinking their ambitious EV sales goals.

Rising concerns about EV capital costs, uncertainties around a number of elections this year, especially in the U.S., and a shortage of rapid-charging stations are the three key factors slowing the EV momentum, Goldman Sachs Research analyst Kota Yuzawa said in May.

The slowdown in global EV sales has hit the profits of the major EV battery manufacturers this year, too.

Well it seems clear that people do not want to buy an electric car, unless cajoled /subsidized / compelled or forced to do so.

Given the free choice most people just don’t want an electric car.

I always honk as I drive by the marooned EV owners at the charging stations.

The solution is simple. Order the Germans (and everyone else) to buy EVs. And send a scolding prerecorded message from you-know-who to anyone who resists.

Not to mention all the fossil fuels in the form of plastics.

What’s always cracked me up is these green weenies are completely ignorant as to where the other end of that charging cable is plugged into.

Due to the fact the technology is still quite a ways from being mature. They need to reduce the size and weight of the battery pack, for starters. And improve charging speed so you can go from 0 to 85 percent full charge in around ten minutes on a public DC charger.

Back when Chevy Volt was a thing, so quite a while ago, a friend bought two. He paid the recommended company to come out and install two 220V chargers in his attached garage. I don’t recall the exact cost, but I’m thinking it was about ten grand. A week later he got a certified letter from the company that installed the chargers. The letter warned against charging the cars inside the garage (where they had installed the chargers) or leaving the chargers unattended. Clearly it was a cover your a$$ by the charger company’s lawyers. But even then, they knew that the technology represented a danger to the public.

The recent ship fires started by EV’s destroyed some four thousand brand new high dollar cars. The airport fire at London’s airport resulted in requirements for parking that no sane building financer would agree to. (Separation from nearby cars equivalent to many more parking spots, extra automatic sprinklers, reinforced floors and walls to handle the excessive weight...) Not only are EV’s not ready for prime time. They never will be. As for use in large countries like the US, each state in the US is bigger than most European countries so the infrastructure to convert even a big fraction of the auto industry simply isn’t practical.

Dem politicians pay people to "buy" them or vote for them.

The con is being exposed. Worse for the environment, more expensive to run, danger of fire & explosion, dependent of inadequate charging network, damages road surface, resale value poor compared to gasoline cars. If numbers increase would overwhelm the power grid.

They can’t compete unless government policy mandates or helps them. The only ones that going to still sell EV’s are Tesla and possibly Toyota.

“each state in the US is bigger than most European countries”

The EU is slightly larger than the US.

The EU has 27 countries.

That would put the average EU country almost 2x the size of the average US state.

EVs are a fad. In a few years they won’t be able to give them away. Many will go to the crusher with less than 10 miles on the odo.

Porsche-VW-MB call the shots in Germany.
All have pretty much turned their backs on EV.
