Houthi drone expert among those killed in U.S. strike in Iraq
The Washington Post ^ | August 5, 2024 | Alex Horton

A Yemeni drone specialist who had traveled to Iraq to train other Iranian-backed fighters was among those killed in a U.S. airstrike near Baghdad last week, American and Iraqi defense officials said, illustrating the extensive cooperation among militant groups supported by Tehran.

The July 30 airstrike in Musayib, a town south of Iraq’s capital, targeted militants preparing to launch an attack on U.S. forces, officials have said. The strike killed Hussein Abdullah Mastoor al-Shabal, a Houthi commander, though the Pentagon was unaware of who he was until after an assessment of the operation’s results, said the U.S. official, who like others in this story spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the airstrike.

The strike, the first such American operation in Iraq in months, is part of a broader cycle of violence that has gripped the Middle East since the war between Israel and Hamas erupted in October. The incident followed attacks on American positions in Iraq and Syria in recent days, officials have said, ending what had been months of relative calm between U.S. troops and the militias there. Hamas in Gaza, Hezbollah in Lebanon, the Houthis in Yemen and a cluster of militias in Iraq and Syria all receive weapons and training from Iran, part of a vast anti-Israel, anti-U.S. network Tehran has supported for years.

***Four Kataib Hezbollah militia members also were killed in last week’s airstrike, according to the group, one in a constellation of Iran-backed outfits overseen by the Iraqi government.

***The Houthis have emerged as a security threat in the region, attacking merchant vessels in the Red Sea and harassing U.S. forces deployed to help protect them. In response, the Biden administration has directed numerous strikes on the group’s facilities in Yemen, including missile and drone launch sites.

So says the Washington Post

they also told me Trump was a Russian spy, and he had a secret server in Trump tower that communicated directly with Putin - from unnamed intel sources, of course.

They killed the one Hootie that wasn’t too inbred to fit a drone! He was a special unicorn that cannot be replaced.

My goodness! The Iranians seem to have their tentacles everywhere! How could they afford it? Oh, wait a minute, we’re paying for their terror network. Thanks Kamala and Joe

Don’t know if this is true, but if it is, it’s pretty obvious that SloJo and Camela weren’t in on the decision to fire. You can probably add the Secretaries of Defense and Homeland Security to that list.

Besides blood lust, any of you freepers have a clue why you celebrate when goat herders are droned? Why the Houthis became America’s enemy #1? Anyone?

Here’s a clue: The US war on Iraq really pissed off the Saudi’s. Their enemy was Iran and defeating Iraq would create a vaccumm in the ME, which Saudis thought the Iranians would fill. They were right. So GB2 made a deal to fund and arm Saudi’s war in Yemen, another pointless sunni vs shia religious war, and boy did the US live up to that. Billions given, billions more in weapons sold, so Saudi could smart bomb goat herders into oblivian. It worked. 500,000 dead civilians, a genocide by every measure, but enough survived to retake parts along the coast with Iranian help. Yes, Houthis attack US assets and allies, but not without reason, and apparently effectively enough to stop 90% of shipping in the Red Sea. Not too bad performance for a bunch of goat fuckers against the most powerful, modern military in the world, is it?

Your response is nonsensical, off point and a non-sequitur. However, it is very good at exemplifying that, indeed, you have no clue. Explains alot.

Or you’re a troll.

This forum is for actual reasoned discussion. Go back to your mom’s basement. Your hot-pockets are getting cold.

“The Houthis attack US assets and allies, but not without reason”

Seriously??

What possible reason do the Houthis have to shut down red sea shipping? What reason do they have to attack Israel or the USA, which has never taken any offensive military action against them?

There is no “genocide” here. You start a (civil) war, people die. Has been happening all over Africa for the past 50 years and nobody gives two poops.

You are right about the effectiveness of the goat herders but that is due to geography and a failure of strategy and imagination. The Houthis are terrorists funded by Iran, pure and simple. There is no reason for them to exist anymore than for OBL or ISIS to exist. Yemen should have been turned into a parking lot at least a decade ago.
