“If you think a woman can’t beat Donald Trump,” Amy Klobuchar declared, “Nancy Pelosi does it every day.” Speaking from the stage of a Democratic presidential debate in November 2019, the Minnesota senator felt compelled to address head-on one of her party’s central anxieties.
Four-plus years later, with Vice President Kamala Harris’s sudden ascension to the top of the Democratic ticket, a woman is again trying to beat Trump in a presidential race—and the machinations of Pelosi, the former House speaker who worked to pressure President Biden out of the race, helped put her in that position. Another woman, Nikki Haley, was the last candidate standing against Trump in the GOP primary.
The influence these women are exhibiting is a testament to the dramatically changed landscape for women candidates since Hillary Clinton lost to Trump in 2016. In 2024, seismic shifts in the politics and perception of gender have given women more societal license to wield power unapologetically—even as they confront an electorate more polarized along gender lines.
“It feels different than when Elizabeth and Kamala and I ran” in 2020, “or when Secretary Clinton was a candidate,” Klobuchar said in an interview. The biggest difference, she said, is that many criticisms that once registered as sexist now seem to backfire. Harris, she said, still faces heightened scrutiny because of her gender, but has been able to hit back with humor and make her opponents appear ridiculous instead.
