California regulators propose gov’t takeover of oil refineries to stave off energy crisis

California regulators have proposed a variety of government intrusions into the petroleum industry in order to combat future energy price surges, according to a report released Thursday by the California Energy Commission (CEC).

As the Golden State continues to pursue its green agenda, the CEC expects some of California’s nine oil refineries to be shuttered due to falling demand, which would give the remaining refineries increased pricing power and raise the possibility of a surge in gas prices, the study concluded. To solve this problem, the commission proposed a variety of government interventions, including expanded regulation on private refineries, the establishment of state-owned refineries and an increase in imports.

“The deployment of ZEVs [zero-emission vehicles] and a robust mass transit system are critical for achieving the state’s climate goals, reducing local air pollution, and eventually eliminating dependence on the volatile global petroleum markets. As demand for gasoline shrinks, refineries may close or convert to processing clean transportation fuels,” the report states. “This will lead to fewer gasoline refineries, with increased market concentration and associated market problems that often accompany it.”

To address the market concentration issue, the CEC proposed a variety of state interventions, including setting up state-owned refineries.

“The State of California would purchase and own refineries in the State to manage the supply and price of gasoline,” wrote the study’s authors, with the scope of the initiative ranging from “one refinery to all refineries in the state.”

“including setting up state-owned refineries.”

why in the world would a state that’s doing everything in its power to get to “net zero” go into the business of refining petroleum? ... shouldn’t kalifornia be celebrating with dancing in the streets at refineries being closed?

Because DEI government goons know so much more about refining oil than petroleum engineers.

There’s plenty of oil in California to drill, but it’s off limits due to some strange phenomenon.

The worst part is that if the government gets involved in running the oil industry, they’ll screw it up so bad that we’ll never see another drop of gas from the refineries they’re running.

“shouldn’t kalifornia be celebrating with dancing in the streets at refineries being closed?”

Yes. That is how command and control environmental regulators work. They would deliberately reduce petroleum availability to drive up prices and force everyone into EVs. Something else is going on here. No doubt something nefarious.

They either don’t believe wind and solar will work, or they have something else in mindbfor the refineries.

Great. They can appoint Maduro as chairman of the energy commission, as soon as he’s forced into exile by the Venezuela patriots.

Sounds like a lie. I have heard demand for oil is way up
don’t know about this website but they project more not less demand. ANd i’m not sure but refineries refine oil into many products. Wish i still had the samples my dad brought home 60 years ago.

For those who don’t know, Chevron/Standard Oil of California was a piece of the Rockefeller’s giant Standard Oil that was broken up. Esso/Exxon was Standard of N.J., Mobil was Standard of NY, American/Amoco was Standard of Indiana, Sohio was Standard of Ohio. I’m sure there were others.

The fact that Standard of California is abandoning its home state is telling to say the least.

That’s all Kalifornia needs is to put Newsom in charge of the state’s fuel production and supply. He’s shut it all down post haste to curb the boogieman of global warming.

Energy Racketeering: The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC)

Regulatory power represents the resurgence of mercantilism via tax-exempt foundations using environmental law. This piece relates how the system works using the example of NRDC manipulation of the California energy market and the State's politicans.

Every oil company left in California should announce their immediate closing and refuse to ship any of their products into the state.

It is the major stockholders of those oil companies that are pushing this.

Earth to Lurker: Who is the owner of the largest lithium mining operations in North America?

That would be Exxon/Mobil.
