The chief of the Secret Service said at a press briefing Friday that agents on the ground in Butler, Penn. did not know Thomas Crooks had a weapon until he fired his first shot at former President Donald Trump from the roof of a nearby building on July 13.
Acting Director Ronald Rowe Jr. said the agency took "full responsibility" for the law enforcement failings that day, when one of the bullets fired by Crooks grazed Trump's ear and nearly took his life.
Corey Comperatore, a former volunteer fire chief from Pennsylvania, was killed in the gunfire.
Also injured in the shooting were 57-year-old David Dutch, of New Kensington, Pennsylvania, and 74-year-old James Copenhaver, of Moon Township, Pennsylvania.
"This was a Secret Service failure," Rowe said. "There should have been better security to prevent anyone from getting up on that roof."
"We should have had better coverage on that roofline."
The Butler rally was the first time Secret Service counter-snipers were deployed to support Trump's detail, Rowe revealed. It was a member of that team that fired the single shot that killed Crooks and likely stopped more bloodshed.
"It is my understanding that personnel were not aware that the assailant had a firearm until they heard gunshots," Rowe said.
There will now be counter-sniper coverage for Trump, his running mate JD Vance, President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris and her running mate once they are announced.

Whenever any government employee takes “full responsibility” for ANYTHING, it really means that they have been assured that they will suffer absolutely no repercussions.
The victims need to sue for gross negligence.

Remember, local cops, when the USSS comes to town record everything, keep your body cams on (even when just talking to the USSS) and keep full documentation of everything you do. The USSS already has the bus revved up to throw you under so you must be in continual CYA mode.

Taking “full responsibility “ in America today is meaningless. It’s just words now but once it meant taking blame and the sanction that flows from it. For all it means today I could take full responsibility for World War Two. It was all my fault. Got behind in my mail. Sorry.
I suspect they had immunity from all but gross negligence, which is tough to prove, or criminal acts. But I hope they sue the SS and all its top administrators personally. At least they will feel some pain.
Sounds about right if nothing ever changes.
What does that mean? Are the top officers reporting to prison? Are they responsible or not?

Rowe noticed that a variety of sources are blaming him personally for making the decision to leave big gaps in Trump’s protection, so he probably thought he had to do something quickly, before he got Cheatled. Three weeks later and he finally talks publicly about what happened... That’s totally convincing that there was no cover up going on or anything...

This is how the left works, they orchestrate a grave injustice on the right and then the remedy is to make sure it never happens again by giving great benefits to the left. Imagine if Trump has been killed and in response the demos all got increased protection. That's what they we aiming for, and yes, I do think that the series of bad choices and absurd coincidences that matches the level of absurdity of the Jeffery Epstein murder points to one thing: they wanted this to happen, knew it would, and wanted it to succeed.
They say take full responsibility? That’s like admitting that they did it. They will say it but they won’t actually do anything to make amends. Empty words to hide behind.

Indeed. Rowe needs to tender his resignation. He was part of the chain of command that was denying requested assets for Trump’s security detail.
