America needs direct democracy more than ever — protect the ballot now
The Hill ^ | 07/27/2024 | Chris Melody Fields Figuerdo and Emma Olson

Posted on 07/27/2024 8:52:39 AM PDT by ChicagoConservative27

Progressive issues are winning at the ballot level in states controlled by conservatives. And it’s been happening steadily since 2016.

In response, conservative legislators have significantly intensified their opposition to ballot measures nationwide as we the people have successfully raised the minimum wage, expanded Medicaid, created fair redistricting maps and protected reproductive freedom. The battle for the future of direct democracy has come to the state capitol dome, where legislators have introduced bills that aim to complicate the process of passing ballot measures. These are deliberate, calculated, and organized tactics employed by conservative legislators to undermine the ballot measure process and thwart the will of the people.

This is partisan nonsense. Governor Newsom and the Democrat legislature and judiciary stopped a “direct democracy” tax reform initiative by the citizens this year. Are the authors complaining?

Referendums and initiatives have become a way for billionaires to buy ideological victories they could never get through a legislature.

They do this through lying about what the referendum or initiative does, paying for signatures, then using an intense media campaign to overwhelm opposition, where most voters are swayed by emotional response.

They made some sense when media was local.

Now, they are just ways for billionaires to impose their will.

The “pure democracy” nincompoops are actually losing ground now.

It’s always fun to remind them that democracies are three wolves and two sheep voting on what to have for lunch. Or three rapists and two women voting on how to spend the afternoon.

What they are saying is that they are rigging the elections by registering illegals and collecting their ballots…

They have Direct democracy in California and it’s not working very well.

Most likely, Chris Melody, Fields Figuerdo, and Emma Olson of The Hill are Marxists and/or don’t know what they are talking about.

America is a REPUBLIC (decentralized, representative governance), NOT a democracy (centralized governance).

“Protect the ballot now”. Yes, but this does not match the rest of the headline and doesn’t match the story. Democrats have fought tooth and nail against ballot integrity.

Direct democracy = mob rule.

Direct democracy is the worst form of the use of democracy.

We are a Republic not a democracy for many good reasons.

This is partisan nonsense.

Of course, it is. I'm quite certain that I will never take advice from someone with name like Chris Melody Fields Figueroa.

Direct democratic voting in the democrat primaries made Joe Biden the presumptive democrat party nominee for president in 2024.

Then the fat cats said “no.” In a back room deal that woman who had zero primary votes was selected to replace poor Mr. Biden who had worked his heart out.

He, and his supporters, were kicked to the curb and will now be ignored.

So much for democrat democracy.

The last time that the Democrats had primaries, you’ll have to go all the way back to 2008. After that, every time, they’ve been rigged. They use superdelegates to choose the preferred candidate by the DNC. Otherwise, Bernie may have beaten Hillary.

There’s this pesky little thing called “The Constitution” that prevents that. And for good reason.

Or that the last direct democracy failed 2,300 years ago and has never been tried since.
