TULSA, Okla. (KTUL) — Medical marijuana is legal in the state of Oklahoma, but now the Oklahoma Court of Criminal Appeals has ruled pregnant women with medical cards can’t be charged with child neglect if they choose to use marijuana.
THC are chemicals that are stored in your body fat and will stay there for a long time when using medical marijuana in any form.
But despite the Oklahoma Court of Criminal Appeals ruling the State Department of Health advises pregnant women to stay away from any form of marijuana while pregnant and so do other professionals.
“Some of the biggest concerns are that the unborn fetus can be at risk for what we call fetal growth restriction or the baby not growing as well as he or she should be. I would recommend against any marijuana use in pregnancy,” said Hillcrest Medical Center OBGYN, Lauren Holmes.
The Oklahoma Court of Criminal Appeals says that pregnant women who use marijuana under their medical marijuana card will not be prosecuted for child neglect.
However, according to the Oklahoma State Department of Health and an OBGYN at the Hillcrest Medical Center, using medical marijuana can cause several factors for the unborn fetus.
“Decrease oxygenation, not being able to tolerate the pregnancy or labor as well as worst case scenario, stillbirth. Other concerns of medical marijuana in pregnancy include maternal risk for, what we call distancia hypertension, or increased blood pressure due to the pregnancy,” said Holmes.
Dr. Holmes says expectant mothers who use medical marijuana could also affect the fetus into childhood with autism and cognitive development issues.
She adds a mother could have placenta abruption and lose the baby by using medical marijuana.
One district attorney I talked to says his sheriff’s department has been notified of this and will comply with the ruling.
The most important thing to him is taking care of unborn children.
“One of the things I noticed from the case was that the Court of Criminal Appeals has asked the legislature to review their case and possibly present legislation as a result of that case. So there could be additional legislation going forward what could be problems with individuals that use marijuana while pregnant,” said Wagoner County District Attorney, Jack Thorp.
The OBGYN that I spoke to today says she advises every one of her patients to not use marijuana in any circumstance because it could cause harm to you or your baby.
In short-term cases or long-term cases.
I weep for the future.
What about meth? Or isn’t that “medical” yet?
I have a friend with advanced cancer who uses marijuana to ease his pain and stimulate his appetite. The THC doesn’t even make him high any more. But then he doesn’t have children to look after.
Of all the places... so sad. They’ve gone full head-on on the Colorado train. Very disappointing. But it’s also what our society demands in this present day: legalize and normalize what used to be illegal or immoral.
And, after I read the story, pregnant women should NOT use any type of drugs that could affect the unborn baby. Heck they don’t even want pregnant women to have an occasional glass of wine.
the Marxist liberal parasites in government have been successfully destroying the family for decades
Women who use pot are just not being responsible, not just during pregnancy, but after the child id born. Pot can make you forgetful, or getting pre-occupied with some mundane thing. It’s just not a good idea, unless there is no other relief and you have some help while using.
Well as long as it’s medical
Women used to drink and smoke when pregnant and no one charged them with neglect.
I had a friend who did this.
Now she takes care of her son, a 46 year old severe mental retard.
Might not be worth it.
I bought a sticker for my truck that says “ Legalize Recreational Plutonium”.
Might as well. Everyone else is having fun with drugs and baby killing. Why can’t I have fun?
For a few decades the thing was pregnant women being verbally assaulted by strangers and waitresses for lighting up a smoke or ordering a glass of wine, but now they can light up a doobie.
So no matter what they do, if they use marijuana they can’t be charged with neglect?
When will this stupid country treat women the same as men for negative things they do? If they are equals they deserve equal negative treatment, not special kid glove crap like this. They get on average only a 1/3 the sentences men do for the same crimes, and often get passes, like this. Dam crazy.
TAXPAYERS GET TO FOOT THE BILL
Since Arkansas has legalized alcohol sales in border counties I noticed the Oklahoma liquor stores have closed down and now sale marijuana. One store has a big sign KRATOM in it’s window. They are more MJ stores now than liquor stores in some Oklahoma border towns.
Weed is legal in CaCaLand but with a Dr’s Rx. Which, BTWay, is ajoke. But, if the Dr prescribes it he absorbs the risk of malpractice. Go after him, not some dopehead too stupid to breathe.
