Is Citizenship a Birthright? Maybe Not if Trump Gets His Way | Opinion

As thousands of Republican voters flocked to Milwaukee to officially declare former President Donald Trump as their nominee for the presidency, reporters and talking heads remain transfixed on what kind of vision Trump will lay out for a second administration.

Unfortunately, we already know.

Despite his best efforts to distance himself from Project 2025, Trump has made clear that his platform for a second turn as president will dismantle America's promise as a welcoming nation of possibility. No matter what he chooses to call it, he is committed to enacting disastrous immigration proposals that will set our country back for generations.

More Americans are learning about Project 2025, the 922-page far-right wish list authored by the Heritage Foundation and various Trump loyalists who either served in the Trump administration or aspire to work during a second term. It's a playbook that dramatically centralizes a president's executive power, dismantles regulatory agencies that safeguard Americans, and rolls back protections for civil and reproductive rights. Specifically on immigration, Project 2025 promises to return to and expand Trump's worst policies on immigration.

My daughter was foreign born, I had to go through a lot of hoops to get her US Citizenship to include a DNA test. Why should it be easy for foreigners to obtain US citizenship, especially if they're here illegally?

I doubt this will fly by executive order, Trump is going to have to get Congress pass legislation to kill birthright citizenship

I spent a lot of time and effort to get my wife a green card the legal way. Maybe we just need a TAX on Presstitutes and Media COmpanies to pay all costs of Illegal Aliens.

The Left is really obsessed with Project 2025 even through its not a Trump agenda or even something he talks about. They act like it’s some evil secretive agenda that will apparently end democracy or some nonsense like that.

The 14th Amendment conferring citizenship upon birth in the USA was intended for black slaves in the USA. Those blacks who were forcibly brought to the country hundreds of years prior and had babies born here. Early 20th century, liberal courts twisted the definition to cover anchor babies from illegal aliens. Citizenship is not supposed to be an automatic birthright for babies of non-citizen parents who birth their babies here.

If a child is born to parents who entered this country illegally, they should not be given citizenship. They should be citizens of the country they left.

Asylum seekers should have to become US citizens before their children can be an American citizens.

People here illegally should not be given any benefits like healthcare and only enough food to send them home.

If they want to be here, then enter legally.

The Fourteenth Amendment doesn’t guarantee citizenship by birth in the United States of America. There are conditions. There should be no such thing as an anchor baby.

There appears to be a whole industry catering to Pregancy/ US citizen ship tourism..

Where they essentially fly 8+ mo pregnant women to the US. Put them up in a house and wait for them to deliver a US citizen.

From what I understand this is a big thing specifically for Chinese.

Why are you attacking the poster in post 1? He came here legally and is against people that are not here legally & don’t follow the rules.

Here is a scenario regarding "Birthright citizenship":

Putin and his pregnant mistress come to NYC to address the UN. While in NYC, the Mistress goes into premature labor and gives birth to a very small preemie. The baby is put into intensive care and after an extended stay, survives and is allowed to be reunited with her parents.

Fast forward 16 years. This child successfully applies for a foreign exchange permit, whereupon she returns to the USA to finish high school. She opts to attend a US university and graduates at age 21. She returns to Russia, for post graduate studies for three years, then decides to return to the USA to become a permanent resident. She enters politics, is elected first to Congress and then to the Senate. at age 48 she is selected to be the Democrat VP candidate.

Since "native born" and "natural born" are now considered equivalent, that child under today's practice of enforcing the Constitution, she s would be eligible to be VP and President.

Birthright citizenship should be eliminated and "natural born" Presidential eligibility should be enforced.

You are correct. It took an act of Congress for Native Americans born on U.S. soil to become U.S. Citizens because they were not covered by the Fourteenth Amendment. Children of illegal aliens shouldn't be special.

There is no legal support for birthright citizenship. My understanding is that it is a INA regulation, INA 301.
https://www.uscis.gov/policy-manual/volume-12-part-h-chapter-3

Since that is the case it should be easy to change.

Why should it be easy for foreigners to obtain US citizenship, especially if they're here illegally?

Because they are almost guaranteed to vote Democratic, whether or not they actually vote.

IIRC, the original law pertaining to citizenship stated that one or both parents must be a natural born or naturalized citizen in order to convey citizenship to the child.
