Trump shooter Thomas Matthew Crooks’ father speaks out for first time after son tried to assassinate former president

The father of would-be Donald Trump assassin Thomas Matthew Crooks has revealed the family is just trying to “take care of ourselves” — as he stepped out in public for the first time since the shooting.

Matthew Brian Crooks, 53, made the remarks as he was spotted leaving a grocery store on Monday, Fox News reported.

“We just want to try to take care of ourselves right now. Please, just give us our space,” Crooks said as he loaded bag-loads of items into his car.

“We’re going to release a statement when our legal counsel advises us to do so – until then, we have no comment.”

It marks the first time the dad has spoken out since his 20-year-old son opened fire with an AR-15 rifle during Trump’s campaign rally in Butler, Pa. on July 13.

The would-be assassin was shot dead by a Secret Service counter sniper just moments after he managed to clip the former president in the ear with one of his bullets.

Crooks’ father, a registered Libertarian, had legally purchased the rifle used in his son’s attack.

Well. Perhaps not like that.

The parents were worried enough to call the police when their grown adult 22 year old son “couldn’t be found” during the day. That is odd, isn’t it?

I suspect that over some long period of time, they had heard their son ranting and raving with profanity at high volume and a great deal of animus towards Trump or Conservatives, but most likely Trump.

What else would cause parents to drop on dime on their own son? It surely wasn’t that he went out and didn’t tell them where he was going.

I don’t know anything about his parents except they are professional counselors of some kind, which experience tells me that they are unlikely to be Conservatives.

I agree that without explicit knowledge of the situation, we can’t blame the parents for the crimes of the adult child.

But if it turns out the gun belongs to the father, and he knew his kid was unhinged with political anger (which they likely did given the phone call to police) and he didn’t have his firearm secured, then he is culpable for the death of one man, and the injury of several others.

I don’t know his parents. But in all my years, I do know something of human behavior, and the fact that they were worried enough to call police isn’t idle speculation.

It would be interesting to hear that call they made to the police.

No offense, but multiple paragraphs of speculation... we're never gonna get any answers.

I was responding to the the guy who said the parents should be prosecuted. And that we all should have to have our guns "locked up and secured."

No offense taken. I understand your point, but...the fact that the parents called the police is not in any way speculation. That is a damning fact. I find that very telling.

And in my life experience, I think I have seen enough to have an accurate gut impression of what that actually means when a parent does that to a child. Now, it could be that they were afraid of their child, but if that is the case, the issue with the availability of firearms still stands.

I agree with you what I take to be your view on the last paragraph, the sentiment that we shouldn’t be calling for their prosecution at this point.

What we should be calling for is answers.

And depending on what those answers are, the decision on culpability should rest on what those indications are, not speculation.

Its not just that their troubled son took the AR, its the timing. BTY Chris Ray testified today that one of the bombs was INSIDE the house.

Sometimes its obvious to everyone in the neighborhood that a kid has serious behavioral issues. Everyone but the enabling parents.

Aren’t firearms supposed to be locked and secure?

Depends on what idiotic anti-2A laws have been passed in the jurisdiction.

You are just hitting ALL of the left-wing talking points here aren't you...

Parents are councilors and called police about their 20 year old kid on the day in question.

Yeah... Keeping their mouths shut on advise of their lawyer is probably only PART of the story there. This points to foreknowledge that their kid had a head of of bad wiring. Not concrete evidence, by any means, but certainly a solid data point.

Glad I could help. I only knew his name because of previous news reports about him, and that it was brought up in passing during news reports of the assassination attempt mentioning it refreshing my memory.

IT TAKES MULTIPLE GRAIN ROUNDS.

What the hell does this even mean?

It was a standard DPMS in .223 Rem. No word on brand of ammo used, but Winchester White Box sold almost everywhere is 55gr FMJ.

If they knew or should have known about his mental illness, they were criminally negligent for allowing the kid to access the firearms. They are ripe to be facing a massive wrongful death suit from the firefighter's family and negligence suits from all the wounded, even DJT.

By all means, mock the Commies... But “all” libertarians?

You’re out of your depth newbie.

If they are all like this... There may be a reason for that.

Your first two on THIS thread imply support for an anti-2A “lock up your safety” policy and absolving the 20 year old Adult from the responsibility of his actions by trying to shift blame to his parents.

You are free to clarify your position.

The kid was 20. An adult. Unless he was adjudicated as disabled in some fashion and his parents made his legal Guardians... Your statement is non-sensical.

My oldest is almost 21. Does not live under my roof. If she goes on a shooting spree, I am no more culpable than this potato-heads parents are. Regardless of where she got the firearm from.

I said “most libertarians,” not “all.” Do you have reading comprehension issues or did I hit a nerve? Are you saying you’ve NEVER seen anyone claim to be one thing, but are the opposite? Are you saying EVERY “libertarian” you’ve encountered (on line or in person) are what they claim to be?

I’ve also encountered “christians” who post stuff like “share the lucky Budha for prosperity,” “share this picture of money to get wealth,” etc... I even once worked with a lay pastor (a son of an ordained minister) who read his horoscope “religiously” every day.

I mocked them as well. Hypocrites are great when you feel like figuratively drop-kicking mental midgets!

Maybe you do not like the law, but it is what it is. The theoretical situation you propose is comparing apples to oranges: crooks, obviously mentally ill, lived with his parents who knew or should have known about his mental illness, who had several firearms in the house (we know he had access because he used one in the assassination attempt and the killing and wounding), but in your hypothesis, you say your daughter doesn’t live with you. There’s no comparison between my statement of the law applied to facts and your hypothetical which uses different facts.

That is how I see it, from my experience as a human being. But that said, I also feel that we shouldn’t set up a hue and cry for them to be prosecuted at this time.

If nothing happens...well, that would be different then.

Libertarians are consistently one thing... Capitalists. Free Market types. To the point of utter anarchy. The other being the Non-initiation of force/fraud/theft principle and the number of arguments over that is still going on.

If you find someone spouting Marx’s idiotic drivel about “need”, you’ve found a commie regardless of whatever else they call themselves.

Pretty much the same with RINO’s. Any of them espousing belief’s contrary to the Constitutions limits have utterly forgotten what they are supposed to be “conservative” of...

ALL of which is utterly off topic from this thread.
