A week after surviving an assassination attempt, US Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump on Friday said he spoke to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky by telephone, and pledged to end Ukraine's war with Russia. Trump has repeatedly claimed he would end the war quickly if elected but his frequent praise of Russian President Vladimir Putin, reluctance to directly criticise the Russian invasion and suggestions to back away from NATO deeply concern Ukraine's allies.

*Instead, Trump will politely, respectfully, and privately threaten Putin into a cease fire or even peace on terms that preserve Ukraine and protect its sovereignty but leave Putin and Russia with their sense of dignity intact.*
It works best. The hatred however will continue. Can Ukraine join the ‘normal’ world?
They seem as likable as the Russians and the krauts.
We sometimes fail to appreciate fully the attraction of American culture and the model of democracy and civic life exemplified by the US and Western Europe. It can take a generation or two, but ordinary people around the world overwhelmingly prefer it as soon as they taste the fruits and get to see it in action.
For Ukraine, Poland is an encouraging example of a successful nearby country with strong historic and cultural ties to them. Despite the losses in WW II and the brutality of the Nazis and the Soviets, Poland today prospers and is a member of the EU and NATO. When your neighbor the Joneses are doing better than you, it makes sense to take a lesson from what they are doing.
Russia’s sea trade via the Baltic is easily subject to interdiction by NATO and the EU.
Like it or not, we are invested in Ukraine’s future. Cutting Ukraine off and letting Russia carve her apart would trigger a massive wave of refugees and further impair the reliability of America’s promises of support. The ill effects from that would be felt worldwide.
Everyone wants peace. They want it on their terms though and are often willing to go to war to get those terms. In the Ukraine war, Putin’s goal is restoration of the power and influence of the Soviet Union. Recovering control of Ukraine is essential to that purpose.
If you call for piracy then two can play this game. Also don’t forget North-South transit and Arctic corridors in development.
“When Trump speaks to Putin while making peace, which federal law will Garland charge him with violating?”
Logan Act?
Yeah, right! That’s why in March ‘22 he and the Ukrainians negotiated a peace that gave everything but Crimea back to Ukraine. Some Soviet Union. What a media putz!
China can also be threatened with financial sanctions on any banks or companies that do business with Russia. They would watch the development of an effective soft interdiction regime against Russia with alarm as dangerous experience and precedent for use against China.
The loss of most sea trade in bulk cargoes would have a devastating effect on the Russian economy.
You can’t arrest ships that do not visit your ports. If you plan to do it on high seas, they will either.
Ships and their owners and crews that are sanctioned become commercial pariahs unable to secure fuel and provisions in an ordinary manner and take the most efficient routes. And merchant crews dislike long voyages without fresh food and stops in port along the way. That reduces revenue, runs up costs, and makes them vulnerable in the event of emergencies.
My same thought and that this will be the basis to impeach Trump.
You are daydreaming. Nobody cares about American sanctions anymore, except Europe.
Look how that oil price cap worked. The discount for Urals blend is lowest in history, 10+% of heavy tankers in the world are carrying Russian oil, and Western companies lost monopoly on maritime insurance. Now Yellen is yelling that dollar is losing ground due to a fact that dirham and ruble are gaining weight in oil trade. What will be left of the US once dollar is over?
Done incompetently, like Biden has done, sanctions can be evaded. Strongly applied, like Trump would so, they work.
